PRESS YOUR LUCK developed into a useful handicap hurdler last season, winning twice and leaving the impression he would have benefited from setting a stronger gallop when last seen finishing fourth at Sandown in April. He steps up to three miles for the first time today on his chasing debut and the extra emphasis on stamina should certainly play to his strengths. He won his only completed start in Irish points and could be one to follow over fences for Chris Gordon, who has his team in rude health with four winners from 11 runners in October.

13:35 – Cloth Cap
CLOTH CAP was a useful chaser in his prime, as he showed when putting up a dominant display to win the Ladbrokes Trophy at Newbury back in November 2020. Admittedly, he has been in-and-out in the interim and last season ended on a low note when he was pulled up in the Grand National (later said to have bled). However, it seems that fresh is the best time to catch him and he is starting look dangerously well handicapped judged on the pick of his form. After all, he lines up here from a BHA mark of 144 having finished a good fourth off 156 on last season’s reappearance at Cheltenham.
14:10 – Deeper Blue
DEEPER BLUE ended last season with back-to-back wins over hurdles, first getting off the mark in a maiden at Fontwell in March and then defying a penalty to follow up in a handicap at Exeter just three days later. He produced a career-best effort on the last occasion, hitting the front two out and gradually asserting from there to win by six lengths in convincing fashion. That form puts him right in the mix here and another big run seems assured in his hat-trick bid, with further progress not out of the question on his first start for six months.

14:50 – Collectors Item
COLLECTORS ITEM is bred to be useful (by Flemensfirth and a full brother to the smart hurdler Royal Kahala) and there must have been plenty to like about his runner-up effort on his sole start in Irish points as he was bought for £115,000 afterwards. He then shaped with plenty of promise when again finishing second in a bumper at Newbury in March, sticking to his task well to be beaten just half a length by another good prospect. That was an encouraging start to his career under Rules and he is very much the type to win races over hurdles.
15:25 – Presenting A Queen
PRESENTING A QUEEN made it two from two in bumpers with a comfortable win at Plumpton in April, benefiting from a good front-running ride but showing a good attitude when tackled over a furlong out to land the spoils by a length. That was a fairly useful performance to defy a penalty and everything about her suggests she could be the type to thrive now embarking on a career over hurdles. Runner-up on her sole outing in Irish points, she has a good jumping pedigree and her physique (tall, rather unfurnished mare) suggests she will improve with time as well.
16:00 – Holly
HOLLY looked potentially something out of the ordinary when easily winning a maiden hurdle at Wincanton in December, cruising clear on the run-in to win by seven lengths having jumped well throughout. Her absence since suggests she might have had a setback, but she reappears this season with her potential fully intact. A dual Grade 3 bumper winner in France, she looks open to significant improvement over hurdles and it will be a surprise if she doesn’t prove herself a lot better than a BHA mark of 125 on handicap debut.
16:35 – Manothepeople
MANOTHEPEOPLE showed improved form in a couple of handicap hurdles at the end of last season, first getting off the mark at Huntingdon in February and then defying a 6 lb higher mark to follow up at Doncaster in March. He won with something to spare on the last occasion, making all to land the spoils by five lengths (eased close home). He now makes the switch to chasing and could be a nice recruit to this discipline. A BHA mark of 114 certainly looks fair and the experience he gained when winning his sole start in Irish points should stand him in good stead.
