13:25 – Onward Route

ONWARD ROUTE has shown improved form in recent months, winning a couple of novice hurdles at Hexham and Uttoxeter, and there was plenty to like about he tanked through the race on chase debut last month. He would have likely won but for a catastrophic mistake at the last, so it is easy to construct a case for him back over timber from the same mark. The Navigator and Jackhammer head the opposition.

14:00 – Traprain Law

TRAPRAIN LAW didn’t manage to win in his native France, but he shaped well behind some useful sorts before flying too high in listed company on his final start for David Cottin in February. He has since switched to a very capable yard and his form makes him of interest on British debut. He is taken to come out on top, likely at the main expense of Pavlik, who showed plenty to work on when runner-up to Onward Route at Hexham last time.

14:35 – Haute Estime

Lucinda Russell has a good record when her horses switch to fences and HAUTE ESTIME has all the hallmarks of one that will do well in this sphere. She was progressive over hurdles last season, winning twice, and running a cracker to finish third in the Grade 1 Sefton Novices’ Hurdle at Aintree on her final start. A big, strapping mare she has the potential to do even better now sent chasing, and can make a winning start. The Vollan has the best form on offer and can pose the biggest threat.

15:12 – Nuts Well

NUTS WELL is now an 11-year-old, but he has made a winning reappearance in this race three times in the last four years, including when successful 12 months ago from a 4 lb higher mark. He finished last season out of form, but clearly goes well when fresh, and will surely be primed for this task on his return from six months off. Malystic hasn’t had much racing in the last 18 months but seems to retain all of his ability and rates the main threat.

15:45 – Mortlach

It is hard to argue with MORTLACH’s record over the last six months, winning six of his last eight starts, and he had plenty in hand when scoring over course and distance last month on his return to hurdles. Admittedly, that wasn’t the strongest race, but neither is this, and he is hard to oppose once more despite having to concede a lump of weight all round. Irish point-winner Whelans Bridge made a promising start in novice hurdles in the spring and is the obvious threat.

16:20 – Raddle And Hum

RADDLE AND HUM is a likeable mare who confirmed the previous promise she had shown for this yard when recording her first win over fences at Perth last month, jumping better as the race wore on and there was more punch in her finishing effort under a more reserved ride. The handicapper has raised her 7 lb for that effort but she seems sure to run her race once more and she can strike again in another small field. Readysteadybeau switches to a handicap now chasing and is an interesting contender.

16:55 – Old Jewry

OLD JEWRY isn’t the most straightforward, but he left the impression he would come on a bundle for his run at Perth 11 days ago, and he looks particularly well handicapped at present. He won at Carlisle from a 9 lb higher mark in February and will take all the beating if turning up in similar form. Coup de Gold added another sound placed effort to his collection at Cartmel five weeks ago so he’s fancied to feature, too.
