Rory reckons he's found some value in the markets.

13:31 Newmarket – Good American

Rain would be an unknown, and it’s a competitive race, but I can envisage a better showing from Good American with her stable in excellent form. In need of the run on seasonal/handicap bow, she did better despite being forced wide when fifth at York, just behind a next-time winner, and looks capable of progressing again with the benefit of that experience.

13:51 Ascot – Came From The Dark

Manaccan looks the right favourite here but rain should make conditions ideal for old friend Came From The Dark, whose career has been marred by breathing issues, but whose form at this trip on soft ground is better than any of his opponents, with his win in last year’s Coral Charge at Sandown the benchmark.

14:06 Newmarket – Woolhampton

Woolhampton was a disappointing behind Amichi in a similar race here five weeks ago, but excuses are easy to find for that defeat given she was forced to race widest of the main group, which looked a big disadvantage on the day. A winner over 6f on good to soft ground, she has conditions to suit, is well-weighted by conditions, and can bounce back to go very close.

14:25 Ascot – Hamish

It’s hard to oppose Hamish in the Cumberland Lodge as he looks a notch above his rivals for all a mile and a half is a minimum for him. He comes here having run a cracker to be beaten less than a length by Kyprios in the Irish St Leger, and is just more reliable than the frustrating High Definition.

14:42 Newmarket – Saffron Beach

The fitting of a tongue tie for Homeless Songs is a surprise after her comeback run in the Matron behind Pearls Galore and Saffron Beach, and ready preference is for the latter, who won this race last year in similar conditions and is as reliable as they come.

15:00 Ascot – Vadream

Last year’s winner Vadream has disappointed on the whole this year, but she has shown her best form on soft ground, and had Manaccan and Summerghand behind her when second at Newmarket in August. That race has worked out well, and I’d be inclined to ignore a disappointing run in the Ayr Gold Cup, which came on quicker ground.

15:21 RedcarBarefoot Angel

Her draw is a slight worry with low numbers usually favoured here, but Barefoot Angel looked good when winning the Group 3 Firth of Clyde Stakes at Ayr last time. Very few of these can match that form, and Richard Fahey’s progressive filly is going from strength to strength.

15:36 AscotRhoscolyn

Rhoscolyn was back to form on a softer surface when third to I’m A Gambler at Goodwood and ran well to be a close fifth to that rival in the Sovereign Path Handicap at Leopardstown despite being badly hampered early in the race. Placed over C&D at Royal Ascot, he will be a big player here on recent evidence.
