13:50 – Phoenix Star

This looks open and cases can easily be made for the majority of these, but it’s PHOENIX STAR who boasts the most compelling claims, despite arriving here on a 21-race losing run. Now a six-year-old, he shared the spoils in a significantly stronger handicap than this over course and distance last summer, and his recent near miss at Newcastle suggests that he is coming to the boil once more. The consistent Sir Benedict is just about second choice ahead of the Tony Carroll-trained duo Wiley Post and Pop Dancer.

14:25 – Sir Laurence Graff

SIR LAURENCE GRAFF is bred to be smart and he shaped with plenty of promise on his debut at Haydock last month where he left the impression he was in need of the experience and also didn’t get the best luck in-running. He confirmed the promise of that run when outfought in the finish by one with more experience and he should find that aiding his development further. He is fancied to progress past Newmarket winner Local Dynasty who ran poorly in the Acomb Stakes last time and has to concede 6 lb.

15:00 – Striking Star

The two with experience don’t set the bar too high, so this looks cherry ripe for a newcomer, and it is the Charlie Appleby-trained STRIKING STAR who is taken to come out on top. He has a smart pedigree and represents a yard that are six from 32 with two-year-old newcomers this season. Any market support would look significant. Leadenhall is another who makes plenty of appeal on paper and also represents a yard that are doing well with their juveniles this year.

15:35 – Bayside Boy

Three-year-olds have dominated this listed event in recent years and BAYSIDE BOY is taken to uphold that trend. He didn’t appear to handle the track in a Group 3 at Goodwood last time and is better judged on his effort in the St James’s Palace at Royal Ascot where he wasn’t beaten far and that form puts him top of the list here. He may also be better equipped than several of these rivals were this to develop into a tactical affair, a scenario which wouldn’t aid the cause of Sinjaari, who arguably has some of the best form on offer.

16:10 – Belhaven

BELHAVEN showed ability in her first three starts and was much stronger in the market when making a winning handicap debut at Redcar in May. She relished the step up to a mile on that occasion and got the job done while still looking rough around the edges. That form is solid and she did well to follow up over course and distance when overcoming the run of the race. It is easy to put a line through her latest start at Ascot and she can resume her progress now. I’ll Be There is progressive and looks appealing on her first outing for George Boughey so is one to monitor in the betting.

16:40 – Phantasy Mac

PHANTASY MAC is enjoying a terrific year completing a hat-trick at Nottingham in May and looking fully refreshed after a four-month break when resuming winning ways at Wolverhampton a fortnight ago. That was a career-best performance, having no problem with a drop back in trip and have too many gears for her main rival in the straight. She is up 6 lb in the weights now but strikes as a filly who has even more to offer and looks the one to beat again. Savrola and Later Darling rate the principal dangers.

17:10 – Miss Bluebelle

MISS BLUEBELLE took a big step forward on her handicap debut when going in at Chelmsford last time and a 4 lb rise in the weights doesn’t look sufficient to prevent this well-bred Awtaad filly from following up given she appeared to have a bit in hand at the line. Ffos Las dead-heater Rikona also has better days ahead of her and is next on the list with in-form maiden Kinrarra well in the mix, too.
