13:00 – JEANETTE MAY

A literal reading of JEANETTE MAY’s runner-up effort in minor company three weeks ago has her well treated from her lowly mark back in a handicap and she looks the one to side with. That was her first start for 13 months and she pulled clear of the remainder with the winner, while the booking of Harry Davies is a big plus in this apprentices’ contest. Nine Elms and Kingdom Girl won last time and head the opposition.

13:30 – BEHIND THE SCENES

This looks a strong novice, one which seems sure to throw up plenty of future winners, and it is BEHIND THE SCENES who receives a marginal vote following her successful debut at Kempton last month. She is bred to be useful and overcame weakness in the betting, coming from the rear in a steadily-run race to score with something in hand. There should be plenty of improvement in her now and she can defy a penalty at the main expense of Vermilion, who also showed plenty when third on debut in a race which is working out particularly well.

14:05 – RAGE OF BAMBY

This doesn’t look as strong as the first division and RAGE OF BAMBY is expected to follow up her debut success. She became the second first-time-out winner for her sire in a big-field event at Newbury in June, always well positioned as the race went but getting on top of several who had the benefit of previous experience in the finish. She hasn’t been seen since, but remains with plenty of potential, and this looks a good opportunity. Beautiful Star has a bit to find but can be expected to come on from her debut, and the same applies to Royal Design.

14:40 – IN THE STORM

IN THE STORM did plenty at the head of affairs when fourth in a course and distance nursery three weeks ago, responding well to first-time cheekpieces, and with Hollie Doyle taking over from an apprentice, a first success may well be forthcoming. River Usk caught the eye in his final qualifying run and is second choice, with Menalippe another to consider up in distance.

15:15 – JOHN CHARD VC

JOHN CHARD VC cost 100,000 guineas as a yearling and has shown enough to suggest he is up to winning a race of this nature in two starts so far, finishing runner-up to a useful sort on debut and running to a similar level when third at the same venue last time. That form sets the standard of those with experience, though You Saw Brigadoon, Kolsai and Falcon Nine are all really interesting newcomers who need monitoring in the market.

15:50 – ARCLIGHT

ARCLIGHT opened her account on her final start last season and has ran well on both occasion since returning this year, beaten only by a course specialist at Brighton last time. She still looked rough around the edges that day, too, but really sticking it up to the winner in the closing stages and she promises to be well suited by this longer trip. Another big run is expected despite a 3 lb rise in the weights. Age of Sail is another three-year-old who should have more to offer and can pose the biggest threat.

16:25 – WHIMSY

WHIMSY has really found her feet of late, opening her account on turf debut at Salisbury in July (narrowly from a next-time-out winner) and taking a big step forward when following up on handicap debut last month. That form also received a boost when the runner-up won next time and she lost little in defeat when beaten only by a progressive sort who has since run well since at Kempton last time. The return to turf will be in her favour, while this track should also suit her forward going style. It’s still early days for the maidens D Day Odette and Chichen Itza, with the former marginally preferred as the main danger.

17:00 – BLISSFUL SONG

BLISSFUL SONG possibly just needed her comeback run at Epsom last week, the lack of a recent outing a possible excuse for her tying up close home, but it is encouraging she is turned out quickly, and can land a second win in her last three starts. Electric Love, the mount of Tom Marquand, and Saturday’s Wolverhampton runner-up Gustav Graves may give the selection most to think about.
