Ralph Beckett’s GREY’S MONUMENT took a major step forward with his close third at Nottingham in May and he gets the vote on his return to action. King’s Gem has possibilities if he can find more progress on his third start, while the two well-bred newcomers Lajooje and What A Whopper need watching in the market.
An open race and naturally enough a few of them are open to improvement at this early stage in the nursery season. The claims of Felix Natalis are well established and he looks sure to go well again now back at 6f but GERALT OF RIVIA might be worth chancing on his handicap debut, having hinted at better behind some subsequent winners at Newmarket. Let’s Have A Flyer (second choice) and Strength ‘n Honour are also considered while Boom Boom Pow is not written off on the strength of a Sandown defeat.
Preference is for the 3yo HELLAVAHEART (nap), who got off the mark with his brave win at Chepstow in June and resumed his progress with a good front-running second over C&D last time. The main threat could come from Typewritten, who has had a few clashes with the selection this summer and was just behind her old rival here two weeks ago. Al Gaiya had a near miss on AW last Wednesday and is a big player if she can repeat that form, while others to consider are Point Louise and Good Impression.

The one that stands out is JAHOORI, who found stacks of improvement with his second at Chelmsford last month and ran into a subsequent Listed winner when runner-up again over this trip at Wolverhampton last time. He now switches to turf but sets a very useful standard on his peak form and should be hard to beat for a yard that won this last year. Last month’s Doncaster winner Melek Alreeh is feared most, although Allemande looked inexperienced at Kempton last month and it wouldn’t be a surprise if she took a major step forward on her second start.
This looks a bit trappy but the vote goes to the lightly raced OPTICALITY, who stayed on strongly when runner-up in a Wolverhampton handicap last week and is open to more progress back up in trip on her turf debut. Second choice is Charlie Arthur, who won over 1m4f at Thirsk in May and has held his form well on turf and Polytrack since. The other one on the shortlist is triple turf winner Johnny Boom, who showed signs of a revival at Sandown and has claims if he can build on that.
Tune has form figures of 112142 this year, including a second on turf at Doncaster, and he’s strongly respected back in this sphere after a break. Daany has reached the frame in his last three starts and should be in the mix again, while the handicap newcomer Fawn At Play needs watching in the market at this new trip. However, the vote goes to BROUGHTONS FLARE, who caught the eye with his strong-finishing close fourth at Windsor on his recent return and is only 1lb higher here.
There is a trip query about PURPLE REIGN back at 1m6f but he is in better form than the last time he attempted this far and he didn’t look short of stamina when winning over 1m4f at Chepstow. Most of the others have had good and bad days this year but Eddie The Beagle comes into it on a couple of runs this year and Mogilevich seemed a lot better for the fitting of a tongue-tie on the AW recently and is also considered.
