WELCOME TO PADDY POWER NEWS!

15:42 – Espirito

Miss Attitude comes here in cracking form and in time six furlongs will surely suit her. A course and distance success supplemented by an impressive handicap win at Newbury off a mark of 71 makes her a leading player. A new rating of 81 obviously requires more and at the prices, the bottom weight ESPIRITO could close that Berkshire gap considerably, 10lbs pull for being beaten 12 lengths. I also suspect this stiffer track and more forgiving ground will suit and a double figure price will suit my betting needs.

16:12 – Treacherous

There is a bundle of pace all over the draw here and this could well be set up for a hold-up horse. Of course the sprint track at Sandown Park is notorious for hard luck stories, but I am going to take a chance that the two veterans will dominate the closing stages here granted luck in the run. His Goodwood success signalled that Lord Riddiford has to be a player even off a 3lbs higher mark (still well weighted on last year’s form), but with at least some give in the ground, the year older tip may have the edge. TREACHEROUS finally returned to form last time out in a lesser race at Windsor and will be suited by any further downpours.

16:42 – Dasho Lennie

All unraced maidens running over the extended seven furlongs so a look in the paddock is strongly advised and of course betting patterns will tell us plenty. As such with those two factors not available I will make just a ‘soft selection’ on the well entered up selection. A Champagne Stakes possible, I made further enquiries about DASHO LENNIE, a son of Territories, and he has reportedly been working nicely at home. With the two Godolphin entries having no fancy entries, City of Kings also wears a visor on his first start, and no positive news from the remaining runners, we can either bypass this race as a betting medium or just play to small stakes.

17:12 – Schmilsson

This looks a really tricky event and it could be that the three-year-olds will rule the roost over their older counterparts. Aqwaam is hugely respected as the rains at Galway in tandem with the step up in trip to a mile and a half saw him bounce back to form in style. This stiff 10 furlongs should also suit as long as the ground doesn’t dry out too much. However, I think that SCHMILSSON has been crying out to race on a more forgiving surface. He had a horrible passage at Goodwood last time out which is readily forgiven, but the time before was hardly disgraced behind current St Leger favourite New London in the big 10f heritage handicap at Newmarket.

17:42 – Spirit Of The Bay

Six three-year-olds take on just the two older horses here and I make the top weight and four-year-old a solid each-way play if the dead eight remain. SPIRIT OF THE BAY has solid form over a furlong less here, needed every yard of the mile trip that day to beat Flying West and off a 6lbs higher mark and has every chance here on this more suitable surface. The younger generation look much of a muchness, with Invigilate very disappointing, so the best of which could well be hat-trick seeking Precisely who wouldn’t mind any more rain.

18:12 – Ikhtiraaq

Coase is finally being shown some mercy by the handicapper and should be a player here off a mark of 82, last won off 81. He could prove the biggest danger to Rawyaan and my selection, IKHTIRAAQ. The former is seemingly not the most consistent type, but has bits of form which entitle him to huge respect, but  it is hard to get away from the hat-trick seeking Newmarket raider. He needed every yard of the Yarmouth mile to win off 79 and then after being gelded comfortably defied a 4lbs penalty at Pontefract. This stiff track should play to his strengths and although a 10lbs penalty requires a career best, he remains hard to oppose on only his a seventh career start.

18:42 – Sir Rumi

This staying event is arguably the most difficult of the handicaps to dissect with several of these sure to be suited by this stiff mile and three quarters trip. Star Caliber looks highly likely to be a big player here despite two poor runs this term. However, all of his best form last year was with give in the ground and his second to Surrey Gold at York at the back end of last year reads well in the context of this race and he is set to run from only a 1lb higher mark.

Last time out winners Single (run well here before) and Aggagio are also respected, but Richard Hannon’s charge SIR RUMI could be ready to strike off a career low handicap mark. He was inconvenienced by the soft pace last time out at Haydock Park and is better judged on a keeping on sixth of 18 behind Candleford in the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes at Royal Ascot.
