This Sunday’s card at Deauville is all about one girl – the 11-time Gr.1 winner Verry Elleegant, who goes in the feature Prix Jean Romanet (Gr.1) at 14:50. Now while she may bolt up, there are eight runners in the race, and I am preferring to edge towards the each-way punt. It’s impossible to tip BLACKBEARD, who should sluice home in the Morny at 13:33, so my NAP comes later in the card, and I am really looking forward to seeing how my Next Best selection gets on in the Gr.2 Prix Kergorlay (15:25).

Each Way Shout: 14:50 – Aristia

One of the most anticipated contests of the year, the Gr.1 Prix Jean Romanet is a race that revolves firmly around trainer Francis-Henri Graffard, who field the first and second favourites. The Chantilly-based trainer has been hitting the board at lower levels this term but at Gr.1 level, his representatives have been lacklustre.

As an each-way suggestion, Richard Hannon’s ARISTIA could be the play in this tactical affair. She got close enough to Nashwa the last day to suggest that she is up to Gr.1 standard and her run at York was phenomenal. She is drawn in stall 1 and has led in the past, so race positioning shouldn’t be an issue.

If the rain stays away, I think that the four-year-old looks great value at the prices to hit the target here, especially with the Hannon team enjoying such a fantastic season.

Next Best Tip: 15:25 – Joie De Soir

A Ryan Moore-Andre Fabre double team, what’s not to love! JOIE DE SOIR saved me when winning over course and distance three weeks ago and I expect another sensational performance from her again on Sunday. Ryan Moore found the key to the filly, who had placed on her eight previous starts without winning.

Highly tried in the past, Joie De Soir is faultless over these marathon trips and has even finished fourth in the Gr.1 Prix de Royallieu. She is prominently ridden and holds a fair few of her rivals on previous form. This is one of the rare occasions where there is no overseas raider amongst the field and there is very little to disadvantage the four-year-old, although fillies and mares have a poor record in the Kergorlay (2 in 15 years).

NAP: 16:00 – Jannah Flower

A five-runner race with stacks of quality is perhaps a dangerous play for a NAP selection, however JANNAH FLOWER looks to be maturing with age, is proven over the distance and had her form handsomely boosted by Quickthorn at York this week.

William Haggas’ Sea La Rosa carries a penalty for her Gr.2 success and has never travelled to France, so I think that she may be vulnerable, especially if taking the literal weights and ratings into consideration where Jannah Flower is technically a pound ‘better off’.

I like Jannah Flower’s style of racing a lot and she is very versatile, while also being able to spring at the finish. Her trainer Pascal Bary is not the force he used to be, but he is having a few winners of late, and his seasonal percentage is decent (15%).

She is a dual Listed winner who has only tried Gr.2 level once so far (beaten 1 ¼l by Quickthorn). I think we still haven’t seen her full potential and hopefully this Sunday is the big unveiling.
