13:50 York – Mighty Ulysses

Mighty Ulysses is very progressive. He was only beaten less than a length in The Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes at Ascot. He then comfortably won a listed event over a mile at Newmarket last time when he had Alflaila a length and a half back in second. There’s no reason why those placings should be reversed and I expect Mighty Ulysses to take this before going up in grade again.

14:05 Sandown – Mise En Scene

I’m taking a chance on Mise En Scene at the prices. She won her first two starts as a juvenile, including in a Group 3 at Goodwood over 7f. She was fourth in the Fillies Mile at Newmarket, when beaten 3l with Inspiral (Coronation and Prix Jacques Le Maarois winner), Prosperous Voyage (second in the Guineas and won the Falmouth) and Cachet (won the Nell Gwyn, Guineas and close second in French Guineas). The likes of Concert Hall and Magical Lagoon were behind that day.

Mise En Scene did run poorly in the Guineas but I’m not sure she had a brilliant run into that race and has been off since. She returns here with the yard in decent form and if she could hit her juvenile form, she would be a massive player here at a good price.

14:25 York – Nusret

Andrew Balding has won this the last two years with Coltrane and Valley Forge and relies on Soul Stopper here who won at Chester last time over this trip off an opening handicap mark of 85 (now 93). He’s definitely interesting. Al Nafir makes his handicap debut off 92 and is still in the Leger. Wild Crusade got 9lbs for winning a three runner handicap last time and Soulcombe was an eyecatcher last tie at Goodwood over 12f.

Nusret took six runs to break his maiden but this trip should suit and I could see him improving for a strongly run handicap, as he is a strong traveller who needs delivering late. He won last time at the Curragh in a maiden over 12f beating Over The Rainbow who is a really well bred filly trained by Aidan O’ Brien. Mikey Sheehy takes off 3lb here and he looks an each way play.

14:40 Sandown – Defence Of Fort

Desert Hero was impressive on debut and he is a big player. Defence Of Fort was well backed overnight for his Ascot debut and delivered in impressive style. It’s mixed form from the beaten horses but a few have won since. I really liked how much he found under pressure and ran on really strongly. The stiff finish at Sandown should really suit him too. He is in the Dewhurst and really respect Chapple Hyam horses that win on debut.

15:00 York – Jumby

Paddy’s Pick 5 free comepetition on Saturday, with £/€25k up for grabs kicks off at York. Jumby looks priced up as if that run last week in the Hungerford was a little bit of a fluke. I thought he was a really impressive winner and should get his fast ground here too which is so important to him. Eve Johnson Houghton in form with 6-31 (19%) and a Run to Form percentage of 68% the last two weeks. He remains fairly unexposed at 7f and if the run doesn’t come too quickly, I think he has decent claims of winning Group 2’s on consecutive weekends.

15:35 York – Earl Of Tyrone

Earl Of Tyrone‘s form has taken off since joining Paddy Twomey this season. He had failed to win in eight starts for John Murphy for all he was running to a decent level. He was well backed on his debut for Twomey at Leopardstown on his seasonal reappearance and was staying on strongly for third over 10f.

He bolted up in a Bellewstown maiden at 1/5 and then followed up with a Curragh premier handicap win off 87 over 1m6f. He went to Limerick for a Listed race over a mile and a half and beat Raise You by over a length, though he was getting 3lbs.

Raise You then came out and won the Group 3 Leger Trial at the Curragh last week and the third, Inuit, was only beaten a neck in a Gowran handicap off a mark of 101. Earl Of Tyrone is 2lb well in here and looks to have really solid claims. Again, this is another race in Paddy’s Saturday competition.

16:10 York – Silver Samurai

The final race of ITV’s coverage, and second last in Paddy’s £/€25k comp, and I’m backing Silver Samurai, who lost an awful lot of ground here last time when the 4/1 favourite and did well to be only beaten two and a half lengths in 7th off a mark of 98. He had been drawn out of things in the Wokingham previous to that, where he was second home of the low drawn numbers. First home of the low numbers was Fresh, who won the International Handicap on his next start. He is drawn low and has the likes of Mr Wagyu and Lethal Levi likely to make the pace from those drawn in single figures. Provided he breaks cleanly this time, he would look a very big price, considering his only other previous start at York was a neck second to Challet over 7f.
