13:50 York – Mighty Ulysses

ITV Saturday gets under way here with the Group 3 Strensall Stakes over 1m1f. Very hard to get away from MIGHTY ULYSSES who is a pretty good horse when he gets it right for John and Thady Gosden and Frankie Dettori. The St James’s Palace Stakes fifth was back to winning ways at Newmarket last time and gets weight from the older horses. Hard to stop and this trip should be ideal.

14:05 Sandown – Grande Dame

ITV are also at Sandown Saturday for this Group 3 Atalanta Stakes for fillies and mares over 1m. GRANDE DAME is pretty useful and bar one blip has shown a high level of form this season for John and Thady Gosden. The trainer has a strong hand here with the unbeaten Laurel, but I’ll stick with the mount of James Doyle.

14:25 York – Soul Stopper

This is the Melrose Handicap for 3yo over 1m6f. SOUL STOPPER has been a different horse since being gelded and rattling off two wins at Chester and Salisbury. Those victories only came in small fields and he won’t want to start slowly as he did last time, but he stays well and is clearly improving. Strong Each Way claims for Andrew Balding and David Probert.

14:40 Sandown – Desert Hero

ITV also show the Group 3 Solario Stakes for juveniles over 7f. Often won by a good one this. DESERT HERO looked a proper horse for The Queen at Haydock on debut and must have a great chance for William Haggas and Cieron Fallon. The son of Sea the Stars is bred to get better with age and distance and might just be very good although this is an open renewal.

15:00 York – Al Suhail

Now the City of York Stakes, a Group 2 over 7f, which is the first race of Saturday’s Paddy’s Pick 5 competition. I love Sacred but tactically this might suit Godolphin’s AL SUHAIL who goes for William Buick and Charlie Appleby. My selection has been off the track a long time but is well up to this grade on his bets form. He can sometimes go from the front and that might not be a bad place to be in this line-up. I’ll chance a few quid Each Way he’s ready for the return.

15:35 York – John Leeper

The big betting race of the day in the Ebor Handicap over 1m6f – another of Paddy’s Pick 5 races. Earl of Tyrone has been all the rage, but let’s keep the faith with JOHN LEEPER even though he was hopeless for me at Goodwood last time. The Ed Dunlop-trained one-time Derby hope is slow as an old boat, but he’s been crying out for a decent pace to run at over this trip and finally he gets the chance. Ironically he also gets Adam Kirby on board, who was taken off in the Derby in favour of Frankie Dettori only for Kirby to go and win the race on Adayar. An eachway chance.

16:10 York – Gulliver

Finally for the week at York a handicap over 6f, which is the next race of the 5 in Paddy’s £/€25k free competition on Saturday. Only four runs ago GULLIVER was third of twenty one at this track in a similar race and now he’s a big price off 2lb lower. He’ll do for me eachway for Martin Harley and David O’Meara. There was also a glimmer of hope at Goodwood last time when in midfield. Fingers crossed the old boy has another going day.

So best of luck and pray for Yeeehaaas. You hear me Paddy?
