Sacred scored in last year’s renewal but William Haggas’ filly does not return to defend her crown with a tilt at next week’s City Of York Stakes on the agenda instead.

Hungerford Stakes runners

Chindit

Trainer: Richard Hannon Jockey: Pat Dobbs Age: 4 Weight: 9st 11lbs Draw: 4

Landed the Group 2 Summer Mile at Ascot last month. Put in his place back in Group 1 company at Goodwood since but much respected at this slightly lower level, despite his penalty.

****

Jumby

Trainer: Eve Johnson Houghton Jockey: William Buick Age: 4 Weight: 9st 8lbs Draw: 6

Four-time winner who has recorded excellent placed efforts in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot and Bunbury Cup at Newmarket this summer. Bit disappointing with cheekpieces added when well held in International back at Ascot last time but he’s not the type to stay down for long. Headgear off.

***

Pogo

Trainer: Charles Hills Jockey: Kieran Shoemark Age: 6 Weight: 9st 8lbs Draw: 2

Grand servant who made all in Group 3 events at Haydock and Newmarket this summer. Another fine effort when close third in Lennox at Goodwood last month. Major player.

*****

Run To Freedom

Trainer: Henry Candy Jockey: Dane O’Neill Age: 4 Weight: 9st 8lbs Draw: 3

Smart colt who has landed Windsor listed and Salisbury conditions events (both 6f) this term. Successful over 7f last year. Likely to be in the shake-up.

***

Double Or Bubble

Trainer: Chris Wall Jockey: Jack Mitchell Age: 5 Weight: 9st 5lbs Draw: 9

Likeable mare who took the Group 3 Abernant on her 6f Newmarket reappearance in April. Respectable fifth in July Cup there latest. Just as effective at 7f. Each-way claims.

***

Happy Romance

Trainer: Richard Hannon Jockey: Hollie Doyle Age: 4 Weight: 9st 5lbs Draw: 10

Has enjoyed some of her finest hours at this venue. Met a bit of trouble and shaped as if still in form when fifth in Group 3 Hackwood here (6f, good to firm) 28 days ago. Just just her second attempt over 7f. Player if her stamina holds.

****

Primo Bacio

Trainer: Ed Walker Jockey: Richard Kingscote Age: 4 Weight: 9st 5lbs Draw: 8

Smart filly at her best. Latest 3¼ lengths fifth of 15 to Oscula in Oak Tree Stakes at Goodwood (7f, good to firm) was no more than respectable, though, and this is tougher if anything.

**

Dubai Poet

Trainer: Roger Varian Jockey: Andrea Atzeni Age: 3 Weight: 9st 2lbs Draw: 7

Showed improved form back down in trip when 1¼ lengths third of 15 to Noble Truth in Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot (7f, good to firm) 8 weeks ago. Claims if in similar form.

***

Tiber Flow

Trainer: William Haggas Jockey: Tom Marquand Age: 3 Weight: 9st 2lbs Draw: 1

Won 4 of his first 5 starts, including a a 6f course listed race in May. Cheekpieces on first time, bit disappointing when only eighth of 20 in Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot but freshened up since and no surprise were he to resume his progression now. Headgear off.

****

Wings Of War

Trainer: Clive Cox Jockey: Adam Kirby Age: 3 Weight: 9st 2lbs Draw: 5

Mill Reef winner over 6f here last autumn. Has recorded some creditable in-frame efforts kept to 6f this term, including fourth in Curragh Group 3 last weekend. Up in trip.

Hungerford Stakes tips

Timeform: Plenty in with a shout in an open renewal of this Group 2. The front-running POGO has thrived over 7f this summer and is the percentage call. Tiber Flow can bounce back from a lesser effort in the Commonwealth Cup and provide the chief threat ahead of Richard Hannon pair Chindit and Happy Romance.
