Horse Racing Tips: 14/1 pick tops Paul Jacobs’ Sunday shouts at Haydock

Paul Jacobs fancies the double digit odds on Colombe in the first race of the day.

15:45 – Colombe

There is plenty of pace across the field here but with the turf riding beautifully after rain earlier in the week I think that we should get a really good run from the bay filly COLOMBE. She started the season on fire on good ground, but a quicker surface has not suited her since. The handicapper has been kind and she is back down to her last winning mark. I make Show Me Show Me a big danger off a decent mark.

16:15 – Charyn

The market will obviously be very important here, but there are some nicely bred sorts set to line up with Roger Varian’s charge CHARYN having a string of nice entries later in the season. It can only of course be a tentative selection though without seeing these newcomers in the paddock.

16:45 – Rambuso Creek

Desert Doctor continues to disappoint for Ed Walker but I will be including him in my combo forecasts and tricasts as he is hard to resist off this mark. But a better percentage call could well be Kevin Ryan’s lightly raced sort RAMBUSO CREEK. He has twice looked unlucky at Beverley and Pontefract and his chance is there for all to see, while those com wagers will also include the unexposed Abu Malek.

Haydock racing

17:15 – Solar Joe

Although down to a mark of 79, I am still not convinced by top weight Anythingtoday, but I am no longer prepared to follow him over that punting cliff. SOLAR JOE looks the solid each-way play here following a running on second over nine furlongs at Hamilton Park and this extra 262 yards looks right up his street. Making his handicap debut, American Flag may well be worth a saver if strong in the betting and is the one I fear most.

17:45 – Have Secret

I didn’t have a particularly strong view on this event as several of these will be well suited to the step up to a seventh furlong most notably Alan King’s Nap Hand and of course the selection. HAVE SECRET literally lost his race at the start last week at Chester, which is easily done at that turning track, and if none the worse for that run Richard Fahey’s charge should go close here with the extra yardage in his favour off exactly the same mark.

18:15 – Don’t Tell Claire (Each Way)

This mile handicap looks terrifically competitive and I could easily take three in the race and fail to hit the frame. Last time out winners Rose Barton and Taarabb both have to be respected, but because of the open nature of this race I was quite happy to have an each-way punt on the top weight, DON’T TELL CLAIRE. She has run three cracking races this season, all at Ascot, and now finds herself only 3lbs higher than for her last victory. We have plenty of pace at the sharp end here and that should give this daughter of Gutaifan a lovely tow into the contest which suits her run style.

18:45 – Run For Oscar

Bottom weight Levitate is open to even more improvement, and even though a career best is needed in a better race I wouldn’t discount that. The youngster RUN FOR OSCAR is a huge danger, among several progressive sorts, to the Irish raider. This will be only his sixth start on the level on turf and I thought that the seven-year-old was a real eye catcher behind the smart Maze Runner at the Curragh when he didn’t get the best of runs. The rain earlier in the week was a boon to his chances and he looks the rightful favourite in the finale.
