Frank's keen on Queen's Pardon in the 19:15 for the opening night of the Galway Races.

17:10 – HMS Seahorse

How can you oppose HMS SEAHORSE? He’s among the favourites for the Galway Hurdle so I’m surprised he’s running here. He’ll take an awful lot of beating. As Tears Go By was relatively impressive at Sligo but this is far tougher. Razdan is interesting on his Flat form where he’s rated in the mid-70s but using that as a guide, HMS Seahorse has gone up to a mark of 101 after his demolition job at the Curragh the last day. He also has really solid hurdles form and this’ll be a nice little exercise before Thursday.

17:40 – Punters Poet

I’m going to take a chance on PUNTERS POET for Matthew Smith with Brian Cooper riding. He shaped OK at Killarney but he was jumping out to his right and that really cost him. Both his wins have come right handed and he was third at Galway last September off a mark of 104. The little bit of rain that’s forecast won’t do him any harm, he stays two-and-a-half miles and if he’s there or thereabouts coming to two out he’ll fly up the hill. He’s a fair each-way price.

18:10 – Pivotal Trigger

Tiverton will be all the rage as he was a close second on debut at the Curragh behind Proud And Regal, who has gone on and won a Group 3 at Leopardstown. The fourth has won since so the form is rock solid but the Dermot Weld form is a massive, massive worry as it’s 43 days and 56 runners since he last had a win on the Flat. I’d take a chance on PIVOTAL TRIGGER. He’s bred to stay well and it was a fair debut run at Gowran Park when fifth behind Zoinnocent, who has finished second in a Group 3 since. My selection was then third behind La Dolce Vita and Hans Andersen at Tipperary; the former has placed in a Group 3 while the latter has come out and won since. A bit of easier ground will be no harm at all.

18:40 – Crowns Major & Monas Melody

I’m going to throw two darts at the race. CROWNS MAJOR was second here last year over two miles and then bolted up a couple days later in a Premier Handicap off a mark of 82. He’s gone up 14lbs but the form of that is really strong. He showed nothing at all on his first start of this season but Rob James takes off 5lbs and that’s an absolute steal.

MONAS MELODY was just touched off at Killarney a couple of weeks ago off a mark of 85. I think she’s underestimated off a mark of 87, was a decent second here last year behind Micro Manage and had better-rated horses well behind her. She is a bumper winner and that form is really strong.

19:15 – Queen’s Pardon

I’m quite keen on QUEEN’S PARDON. She’s drawn in four which is a positive provided she breaks okay. She’s a lightly-raced three-year-old and was well backed when a non-runner at Naas last week. She ran a cracker on her handicap debut at Naas over 6f in April off a mark of 69 and was less than two lengths behind Ano Syra, who is now rated 24lbs higher.

The stiff finish at Galway is really going to play to her strengths. She’s very well handicapped off a mark of 70 and the booking of jockey Declan McDonogh is no negative.
