Topweight HOT DAY was beaten less than 1l when third under Lewis Saunders at Newbury recently and looks the one to beat off the same mark. Daany has possibilities if his rider can get him to settle better than is sometimes the case but a bigger threat to the selection may come from Mountain Ash, who didn’t fire in a visor last time but has his usual cheekpieces back on today.
A market move for one of his unraced stablemates would put a different complexion on this race but, as things stand, it’s hard to oppose SIGNCASTLE CITY, who was a very promising fifth in a good-quality Newmarket maiden two weeks ago. Expeditious has shown enough on her first two starts to suggest she might fare best of the others.
Michael Blake’s 5yo WE’RE REUNITED recorded a good Topspeed figure for the grade when winning a basement-level classified race at Bath last month and is still very well handicapped on older form, so he is selected in the hope his revival continues. Speedy front-runner The Defiant may not be ideally suited by the stiff finish here but he could help to set things up for Q Twenty Boy (second choice), who is a strong-finisher over this trip.
3yo colt Conflict has finished second on both starts this season and may have more potential than 4yo filly KARUOKA but the latter ran a big race from the front before succumbing to the very strongly backed favourite over 7f here two weeks ago and today’s drop in trip could prove the key to her.
The most interesting runner is PROPHECY (nap), who returned from a long absence with a very promising run at Ffos Las this month. He could plausibly have won that race with better luck in the closing stages and there’s every chance he’ll be seen to even better effect on this stiffer track and with that outing under his belt. Secret Handsheikh was placed off today’s mark over 5f last time and will be suited by today’s return to 6f. Michaels Choice, a C&D winner in May, sports new headgear and is next on the list.

She tends to race too freely and has looked somewhat gawky but ATLANTIS BLUE went down fighting behind a subsequent winner on her seasonal debut in April and can open her account here. Bellstreet Bridie doesn’t appear to be making any progress but she ran well in a recent handicap and is earmarked as the main danger.
An unexposed 3yo from Sir Mark Prescott’s stable would normally be of strong interest in a race of this nature but At The Double was well beaten on his recent handicap debut and will need to race with considerably more enthusiasm in the first-time blinkers today. A much safer option is ALKHATTAAF, who has remained in good form since his breakthrough win in May and could have untapped potential over today’s trip. Madeeh ran well in a higher-grade C&D race in May and is feared most.
