A cracking clash of the generations is on after six runners were declared for the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Irish Derby hero Westover and Epsom Oaks second Emily Upjohn fly the flag for the three-year-olds in Saturday’s 3.35pm at Ascot against their elders including last year’s runner-up Mishriff and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Torquator Tasso.

King George VI runners

Broome

Trainer: Aidan O’Brien Jockey: Ryan Moore Age: 6 Weight: 9st 9lbs Draw: 1

Very smart horse who looked better than ever when winning Hardwicke over C&D 5 weeks ago, ridden aggressively from the front. This will be much harder to dominate, however, and beaten over 9 lengths in this 12 months ago.

**

Mishriff

Trainer: John & Thady Gosden Jockey: James Doyle Age: 5 Weight: 9st 9lbs Draw: 2

Top-class horse who had finished a creditable second in this prior to recording a third Group 1 win in imperious style in Juddmonte International at York last summer. As good as ever back from 4 months off when beaten a neck in Eclipse at Sandown, finishing strongly after meeting trouble. Big shout.

****

Pyledriver

Trainer: William Muir & Chris Grassick Jockey: P. J. McDonald Age: 5 Weight: 9st 9lbs Draw: 4

Took his place at the top table with victory in Coronation Cup at Epsom last year, ridden more prominently and gamely getting back up near the finish. Arguably unlucky not to win the Dubai Sheema Classic in March but was easily brushed aside in this year’s renewal of the Coronation Cup. More needed.

**

Torquator Tasso

Trainer: Marcel Weiss Jockey: Rene Piechulek Age: 5 Weight: 9st 9lbs Draw: 5

Won twice at Group 1 level in his native Germany before causing a big surprise in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp in October. All the better for return when decisive winner of Group 2 at Hamburg 3 weeks ago. Has the form to go very close, though seems best on soft ground.

***

Westover

Trainer: Ralph Beckett Jockey: C. T. Keane Age: 3 Weight: 8st 12lbs Draw: 6

Frankel colt who is improving fast, winning Group 3 Classic Trial at Sandown on return before an excellent 2½ lengths third of 17 to Desert Crown in Derby at Epsom (would have finished much closer but for meeting trouble). Easy winner of Irish Derby since and may have more to offer still.

*****

Emily Upjohn

Trainer: John & Thady Gosden Jockey: Frankie Dettori Age: 3 Weight: 8st 9lbs Draw: 3

Looked a high-class filly in the making when completing hat-trick in the Musidora at York and most unlucky not to still be unbeaten when denied on the nod in the Oaks, stumbling at the start and forced wide. Bit to find on form taking on the males but she remains with big potential.

King George VI tips

Timeform: Another small field for the mid-summer highlight but it’s still high on quality. WESTOVER is the obvious one after his easy win in the Irish Derby and should get the race run to suit with a strong pace to aim at. John & Thady Gosden hold a very strong hand with Emily Upjohn and Mishriff, who were both unlucky not to win the Oaks at Epsom and Eclipse at Sandown respectively.
