The Big Apple is treated to a clash of Godolphin Vs Coolmore with a host of European raiders hoping to take advantage of a strong dollar and a big prize pot in the Oaks and Derby.
The favourite in the race, Royal Currency, has been 2nd in all but one of his six starts. Horses like that are known as dogs and we really want to take him on here. The obvious play here is Photon for me. Ridden by Jose Ortiz, this debutant has put in a good number of works and his most recent workout of 35seconds for 3 furlongs was an absolute blitz. Trainer Kelly Breen has an 18% strike rate with 1st time starters and it’s 22% when he teams up with star jockey Ortiz.
The Suburban Stakes is a Group 2 over a mile and ¼ and, while only five go to post, this is an excellent renewal with five quality horses. Untreated looks like he’ll get to lead but I don’t think it will be too soft a lead and this will play into First Captain’s hands. The 1.5million dollar son of top sire Curlin has found his most ideal trip after a devastating performance last time out at Pimlico. He can repeat this performance and is one of the stronger bets on the card for me.
Paddy’s generosity goes Stateside this weekend with his ‘Bet £/€10 on the Belmont Oaks get £/€5 Free bet on the Belmont Derby offer’. I think this is elite race placing from Ballydoyle for Concert Hall, having been 3rd in the Irish 1000 Guineas and 4th in the Oaks at Epsom this daughter of an Oaks winner will like the quick start American style of racing. She has been drawn in the carpark which is far from ideal but we have been compensated with her price being that bit bigger. I expect her to be finishing very fast and I’ll be using the €5 free bet on my NAP in the Derby.

Nations Pride is my Saturday NAP. I have been a fan of Stone Age and can forgive his run at Epsom, but the absolute carpark draw is a negative and I think Nations Pride has that bit more speed which will be the crucial factor in this race for taking the gaps. The gate speed Nations Pride showed on the dirt at Meydan can and will be a big factor her and “Our Hero” Frankie Dettori knows very well how to use early speed from a wide draw in big races (cough, Golden Horn, cough).
