WELCOME TO PADDY POWER NEWS!
York 14:05 – STRAWMAN
He had valid excuses for his below-par effort at Carlisle last time, ending up having to make his challenge widest of all, while he also lost a shoe. It’s worth remembering how progressive he’d looked prior to that and the form of his victory at Redcar in early-June has certainly worked out well. Strawman is still only 3 lb higher in the weights and it will be no surprise if he leaves his Carlisle form behind to play a leading role.
York 14:40 – FLOTUS
Proved at least as good as ever when third in the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot last time, keeping on well to pass the post less than two lengths behind the winner. Flotus is clearly a smart filly on her day and there should be more races to be won with her at around this level. The six-furlong track at York should be right up her street and this looks a good opportunity for her to resume winning ways under Silvestre de Sousa, who was in the saddle for both her wins at two.
York 15:15 – YAHSAT
Shaped well when finishing in mid-division in the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot last time, travelling strongly for a long way before getting tired late on. The stiff track there might have been against her, but Yahsat is clearly very effective under these conditions, as she showed when filling the runner-up spot in a listed race over course and distance in May. That form comfortably sets the standard now back in a novice, so she rates a confident selection to defy a penalty.
York 15:50 – ASAASSI
Didn’t need to improve to get off the mark in a maiden at Salisbury two weeks ago, hitting the front entering the final furlong and just needing to be pushed out from there to land the spoils by over a length. That was a fairly useful performance and Asaassi remains one to follow now making the switch to handicaps. A BHA mark of 86 looks a fair starting point to life in this sphere and it’s highly unlikely that we’ve seen the best of him yet after just three starts.

York 16:25 – SALEYMM
Has been running well this season without winning, producing his best effort when filling the runner-up spot in a handicap at Newmarket in May. Saleymm ran another solid race when fifth in a similar contest at Epsom last time, sticking to his task well under a big weight to pass the post only four lengths behind the winner. It’s surely just a matter of time before he resumes winning ways and today could well be the day from a 1 lb lower mark than at Epsom.

York 17:00 – GHATHANFAR
Doubled his tally for the season with a likeable display at Pontefract last time, making all to win by a length and a half in comfortable fashion. This will be tougher following a further 5 lb rise in the weights, but he is clearly in the form of his life at present and the application of first-time cheekpieces could eke out a bit more improvement. In a wide-open contest, Ghathanfar seems sure to go well again back at a track where he has often given a good account in the past.
York 17:30 – THE COOKSTOWN CAFU
Didn’t look entirely straightforward when trailing in last at Ayr three weeks ago, but he could be worth another chance today with cheekpieces added. The Cookstown Cafu is certainly on a good mark judged on the balance of his form and this also represents a weaker handicap than those he has been running in so far this season. It’s far too soon to be writing him off after just five starts and the booking of Oisin McSweeney, who is good value for his 3lb claim, also catches the eye.
