13.42 Ayr – Sound Of Iona

With Grandads Best Girl and Refuge some way out of the handicap it narrows this opening amateur jockeys’ handicap sprint down to a handful. Mews House and old Tanasoq were third and 11th respectably behind Runninwild at Newcastle at the back end of last month and the former should confirm that form here and his last win was off this very rating in a very similar race. Several of these have run at the West of Scotland track before and that very much sways me in favour of the Jim Goldie trained runner Sound Of Iona.

Four from 33 in her turf career to date, those last two wins came off marks of 63 and 65 and she has been placed off a rating of 70 as well last season. But it was her run last time out at Musselburgh that served notice that her turn was close at hand. Hidden away in midfield, he was momentarily outpaced at the halfway stage as the eventual winner skipped clear. However, once back on an even keel, the six-year-old finished with some aplomb and back down to a handicap mark of 58 her chance is plainly there for all to see.

15.20 Chelmsford – Improvised

This looks a tight knot renewal for this Listed contest and you could make a strong case out for the first three in the betting at the very least. Soft Whisper won in the manner of an improving filly last time out and has been freshened up for this, missing Royal Ascot on purpose. Bounce The Blues arguably has slightly better form and has hit the crossbar at this level several times, but there is a strong feeling that a soft surface on turf would ideally suit her better, while Internationalangel thrives here and right up with the best of these on the official figures. However, I am convinced that we will see a bounce back effort from Improvised.

She couldn’t find a way through at Musselburgh two outings back, finishing well, and was then upped to a mile for the first time at the Royal meet when beaten four and a quarter lengths by Rising Star in the Kensington Palace. However, off a slack pace she could never get a shot at the leaders and although not disgraced I was expecting a bit more. I think a turning seven may well prove to be her optimum set-up and with several of these likely to race prominently I fancy the daughter of Raven’s Pass to put that run behind her on only her second all-weather start.

16.02 Ayr – Sweeping

Top weight Orbaan is probably the most likely winner of this one mile handicap despite his welter burden off a mark of 87, but the David O’Meara charge hasn’t won for the best part of two years. A reproduction of his second to Northern Express at York last time out makes him a major player again. However, I just wonder if he can give the weight away to both Cassy O and Sweeping.

The former wasn’t suited by being held up behind a moderate gallop last time out and is respected, but our three-year-old pick had excuses for his last two runs. Firstly, he simply couldn’t handle the undulations of Epsom last time out and the pulled way too hard in the Golden Gates Handicap at Royal Ascot last time out. There promises to be plenty of pace on here and this looks a slightly easier assignment for the youngster.

17.12 Ayr – Danby Wiske

This may well be low grade stuff, but there is little doubt that it is still competitive for this level, for horses rated 0-50. Danby Wiske has done most of his career racing over six furlongs and latterly over seven, but looking severely short of pace in the process over that trip. However, he showed a glimpse of what he may be capable of at Newcastle and Southwell on his second and third last starts when making significant late headway under the minimum of pressure from both Hollie Doyle and PJ McDonald.

There are no less than five pressers and a confirmed front runner set to line up here and that should give the Ruth Carr trained runner a decent pace to chase for a change. His biggest danger could be the top weight Bankawi. The five-year-old probably hit the front a bit too early at Beverley last time out and just wilted up the final climb and looks a massive player off a 1lb lower mark here.

Paul Jacobs’ value plays:

13.42 Ayr – Sound Of Iona
15.20 Chelmsford – Improvised
16.02 Ayr – Sweeping
17.12 Ayr – Danby Wiske
