Day 4 starts with the Group 3 Albany Stakes for juvenile fillies over 6f. MAWJ looked really good for Saeed bin Suroor first time and is a huge ride for Ray Dawson. The daughter of Exceed and Excel hacked up at Newmarket in May and ran as if she had bundles of improvement to come. Obviously Meditate will be a danger but it’s Mawj for me.
Now the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup for three-year-old’s over 6f. I’ve followed EHRAZ off a cliff since his scintillating Ascot success last season and here’s the time to go again. Ehraz has been very much a work in progress and getting him to finish off his races has been the big aim.
He finally did that again at Newbury last time and he’ll travel like a machine off a strong gallop. I’m hoping for the best for Richard Hannon and Jim Crowley and will have a few quid on each-way.
This is the Duke of Edinburgh Handicap for three-year-old’s plus over 1m4f. JUST FINE is interesting here each way for Sir Michael Stoute, Ryan Moore and The Queen. A mark of 97 is clearly workable as the gelding ran off that mark last time when third at York to the very talented Gaassee.
I suspect he’s much better than that effort suggests (he didn’t get a clear run) and it’s cracking form in any case. He has a good draw too.
Group 1 company here in the Coronation for three-year-old fillies over 1m. It’s a fascinating race with Inspiral easily the best of these last season and she can clearly hack up if retaining her ability. I’ll back PROSPEROUS VOYAGE each-way for Ralph Beckett and Rob Hornby.
The 1000 Guineas second was unlucky not to win at Newmarket and wasn’t that far behind Inspiral as a juvenile. A high draw might not be too much of a disadvantage as the daughter of Zoffany is likely to be tucked in to finish off strongly.

Another handicap here in the Sandringham for fillies over 1m and it’s a wide open event. John and Thady Gosden expected CRENELLE to hack up at Newmarket last time and she disappointed in Listed company when only third behind With The Moonlight. Frankie Dettori rides and she might just be thrown in off 92 if that confidence for her latest effort has any substance. She’s an each-way chance.
The Ascot Derby in the Group 2 King Edward VII over 1m4f for colts and geldings. LYSANDER was a flop when last seen at Goodwood but has been always held in high regard and this is winnable. It’s the first time the son of New Approach has some faster ground and the William Haggas team is in good form. Tom Marquand takes the ride and I’m hoping for improvement.
Finally, we have the Palace of Holyroodhouse Handicap for three-year-old’s over 5f. It’s a very tricky event. STERLING KNIGHT is at the right end of the handicap for Ed Dunlop and might surprise a few. My hope won well at Ascot last time and while down to 5f from 6f he should get a strong pace to run at under David Probert.
So best of luck and pray for Ascot Yeeehaaas. You hear me Paddy?
