13:00 Pillars of Earth

PILLARS OF EARTH ran another good race when fourth at Yarmouth last time, sticking to his task well to be beaten less than two lengths. He can race from the same mark here and his consistent profile could count for a lot in a race where plenty of his rivals have questions to answer. He has won four of his nine starts since joining the William Stone yard and this looks a good opportunity for him to add to his tally.

WELCOME TO PADDY POWER NEWS!

13:35 Classy Dame

CLASSY DAME proved at least as good as ever when third at Wolverhampton last time, looking the likeliest winner for a long way (hit a low of 1.36 in-running) before being headed in the final 100 yards. That was his first start for Archie Watson (previously trained by Robert Eddery) and he certainly showed enough to suggest he is on a good mark. In a wide-open contest, he gets the vote to make it second time lucky for his new yard now back on turf.

14:10 Mysterious Night

MYSTERIOUS NIGHT shaped well when filling the runner-up spot on his debut at this course last month, immediately showing fairly useful form to be beaten just a nose. That form is the best on offer in this line-up and there should be more to come from him as he gains in experience. As such, he rates a strong selection to get off the mark at the second attempt, while his smart pedigree suggests he could climb higher still before the end of the season.

14:40 Light of Peace

LIGHT OF PEACE produced a promising first effort at Newmarket six weeks ago, just a bit too green to make a winning debut. She passed the post a length and a half behind the winner in third and the newcomer who filled the runner-up spot gave the form a boost when going one place better on her next start. It was clearly a strong novice and Light of Peace really ought to take plenty of beating if improving at all with the run under her belt.

15:10 Stay Alert

STAY ALERT showed much improved form when chasing home Nashwa in a similar event over this course and distance last time, doing her best work at the finish to be beaten less than two lengths. Nashwa has since finished third in the Oaks, so it was a big run from Stay Alert to get so close to that rival on just her third start. That form certainly sets the standard in this line-up and she is likely to have more to offer given her unexposed profile as well.

15:40 Bearaway

BEARAWAY took another step forward when third on his handicap debut at Kempton three weeks ago, beaten only by a couple of interesting ones and pulling a little way clear of the remainder. He has done all his racing so far on the all-weather, but there is no reason why he shouldn’t be just as effective on turf. He is threatening to come good soon and another bold bid seems assured under Ryan Moore, lining up here from just a 2 lb higher mark than at Kempton.

16:15 Nietzsche’s Star

NIETZSCHE’S STAR proved a totally different proposition when making a successful handicap debut at Lingfield recently, still looking green but just needing to be pushed out in the final furlong to win by a length and a half. That was his first start for eight months (gelded in the interim) and he looks very much the type to mature with racing. Andrew Balding has his team in top form and Nietzsche’s Star is one to keep on the right side even after an 8 lb rise in the weights.

16:50 Al Azhar

AL AZHAR was slightly disappointing at Leicester last time, but he is clearly better than that, as he showed when gaining a narrow victory at Goodwood two weeks earlier. That form has worked out well – the runner-up Swilcan Bridge won a competitive handicap at Epsom on Saturday – and Al Azhar is still only 3 lb higher in the weights than he was then. He is worth another chance to confirm the promise of that effort, with the step up to a mile and a half here also likely to suit.
