Derby Day on ITV gets under way here with a handicap over 1m2f. A wide open event. Many of these have form that interlink and that includes MR BIG STUFF who goes for Richard Spencer and Tyler Heard who takes off a useful 5lb. My hope ran pretty well at Newbury last time suggesting there is more to come. Off a racing weight of 8st he should have each-way claims at the very least despite a nasty draw.
Up to Group 3 class for the Princess Elizabeth Stakes over an extended 1m. BASHKIROVA is a much shorter price than Mrs Fitzherbert despite being beaten by the latter off the same terms at Goodwood last time. That said I understand why, as the slightly extra distance and ground will be right up my hope’s street. Tom Marquand is up for William Haggas and I expect her to be too good.
Another Group 3 in the Diomed Stakes over an extended 1m. Modern News is clearly the improver here and might well be too good. I’ll risk MEGALLAN who was rubbish at Chester last time. The former Dante runner-up has some class and has run well at this track before. If he produces his best he’s not without a chance for the Gosdens and Frankie Dettori.

It’s the pre Derby handicap ‘Dash’ over 5f. The chances are LIVE IN THE DREAM is now too high in the handicap after brilliant wins at Sandown and Chester. He’s up 7lb for that last success but Sean Kirrane takes off 3lb which helps a little. My hope shows blistering speed and will try and bomb out and make all. Fingers crossed for trainer Adam West.

The big one, the Group 1 Derby over 1m4f. A rare Derby stuffed full of trial winners rather than top class juveniles or Classic performers. Desert Crown might easily be good enough and I hope he is for Richard Kingscote who deserves this chance. That said, my two against the field will be STONE AGE and WESTOVER at differing prices.
Stone Age has been high class since being stepped up to 10f, and powered away from his field at Leopardstown last time. The ground is perfect for him. He should stay well and the draw has been very kind for a horse who could go to the front and do a Slip Anchor or something similar to Teenoso. Fingers crossed Ryan Moore gets the job done for Aidan O’Brien.
Westover is a horse I loved when he won the Sandown Classic trial and has scope for much better over this trip. He’s got a kind draw for Ralph Beckett and Rob Hornby and I see no reason why he won’t be in the mix if he has progressed just a little bit. He’s a big horse and could have bundles more to come.
So best of luck and pray for Yeeehaaas. You hear me Paddy?
