17:40 – Wonder Starelzaam
WONDER STARELZAAM has shown improved form since switching to this yard, winning three times, and doing especially well to score at Windsor on his latest start. He won comfortably but was value for even more, overcoming trouble in-running to beat a next-time-out winner. That was his first start beyond a mile, so he is very much unexposed at this trip, and a subsequent 4 lb rise in the weights underestimates him. The Whipmaster also looked better than ever when winning at Lingfield last time and looks the danger.

18:15 – Tajalla
This doesn’t look the deepest edition of the National Stakes, but TAJALLA looked a juvenile going places when making a winning debut at Newmarket last month, landing sustained support in the process. He is bred to be sharp and showed plenty of dash, always up with the pace and displaying a good turn of foot under a hands-and-heels ride. This looks the obvious next step for him and he will take all the beating with improvement forthcoming. Irish-raider Crispy Cat has the form to ensure Roger Varian’s exciting colt doesn’t have things all his own way, however.
18:50 – Thunderous
THUNDEROUS came on for his reappearance when finishing runner-up to Hamish in the Ormonde Stakes at Chester earlier this month, having some of these in behind, and he was only beaten by Stradivarious in the Yorkshire Cup last time. That is some of the best form on offer and, now fitted with a first-time visor and moving up to two miles (should suit) for the first time, he is a tentative selection to resume winning ways. The obvious dangers are Enemy and Quickthorn, who both went close in the Sagaro at Ascot, the former arguably unlucky not to win.

19:25 – Mostahdaf
It is hard to argue with MOSTAHDAF’s strike rate, his only defeat coming when clearly not at his best in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot last year, and he still appears to be improving judged by his smooth success in the Gordon Richards Stakes over course and distance on his return last month. That took his record at this course to three from three, having no problem seeing out the longer trip, and for all this is a deeper race now, he is strongly fancied to record another win before having a crack in Group 1 company (holds an entry in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes). Addeyb signed off with a poor effort last season, but has a good record fresh, and will be a threat if returning near his best.
20:00 – Fox Champion
FOX CHAMPION is on a lengthy losing run – last win came in the German 2000 Guineas for Richard Hannon – but he has a bit of class about him on his day, and may well be worth another chance now in the easiest race he has contested for a while. He only ran respectably at Newmarket last time, but he is now operating from a career-low mark and should appreciate the return to a mile. Inigo Jones made a low-key return to action under a change of tactics at Chelmsford last month but he’s feared most with that under his belt.

20:35 – Super Lover
A competitive handicap for three-year-olds but SUPER LOVER makes a fair bit of appeal now entering this sphere from a potentially lenient mark. He has shaped well on all three starts so far, particularly when runner-up on turf debut after five months off at Windsor three weeks ago. He wasn’t as well positioned as the winner that day and should be well suited by the stronger gallop that is forecast here. Two Tempting escapes a penalty for his recent win at Kempton so warrants plenty of respect back on turf.
