15:30 Enthused

As I found out a few weeks back, these Sunday Series meetings can be devilishly hard to predict with the good prize money up for grabs attracting some huge fields. This opener has plenty of strength in depth for this class four level, but I think we should get a good run out of the Joseph Parr trained entry Enthused who seemed to relish stepping up to this trip last season and could have plenty more improvement in the locker on only his eighth career start.

Top rated Walbank will need to keep a deal straighter than he did on his debut at Ascot earlier in the month to step up and may be worth opposing with this Exceed and Excel colt, Beautiful Sunrise. The James Ferguson trained charge was given a kind introduction by Daniel Muscutt at Newmarket and he can repay the deed by opening his career account at the second time of asking before being raised in class.

16:35 Buckshaw Village

There is plenty of early speed across this massive field of 22 three-year-olds and I suspect a few gambles will be in the offing. I have plenty of respect for the likes of Devaste and recent Ripon winner Bay Breeze, but the each-way nod just goes to the Richard Fahey charge Buckshaw Village who seemed to flounder in the Chester mud last time out. The son of Birchwood could be worth another chance returned to a sounder surface here.

17:05 A Boy Named Ivy

My first thought was to row in with course and distance winner Orbaan who has run well in better races here in the past, but I just thought he would prefer a bit more give in the York turf. Although I may well have a saver on him, I have decided to plump for an each-way play on A Boy Named Ivy. He ran well from off a hot pace on his seasonal debut at Doncaster and shaped as if still in good form on his subsequent two outings where he didn’t get the strong gallop he needs to run at. That shouldn’t be a problem in this field.

17:35 Raatea

Many of these seasoned handicappers have raced against each other down through the years, several times over this course and distance. Gulliver will have his chance in one of these hot handicaps later on the year when the wet weather comes along, but on this faster surface he looks vulnerable. The vote goes to the Richard Hannon charge Raatea who shaped really nicely at Newmarket last time out when seventh of 19 to Blackrod. You could argue he needs a stiffer track, but as long as he doesn’t fluff his lines at the start the five-year-old will be mowing down his rivals close home.

18:05 King’s Advice (each way)

I am going to go a bit left field for this staying event with the Mark Johnston trained runner King’s Advice as I felt he had little chance off a moderate gallop over distance well short of his best at Hamilton Park last time out. The first time blinkers he wore then are retained here and the step back up to a proper staying trip off a fully 4lbs lower mark makes him an interesting each-way play. His biggest rivals could well be top weight Geremia and impressive Thirsk winner Wor Willie.

18:40 Divine Magic

Espressoo is on a real roll for connections and has a lovely sit in box number six to play a major role here in pursuit of the hat-trick. However, she is likely to make the market for us in this deep event and as always value is of paramount importance in such events. Also nicely drawn, Marco Botti’s charge Divine Magic may be able to bounce back from a disappointing back end to last season. This looks a slightly easier contest than her last two starts and the Farhh filly has a fair record when fresh.
