Walk Of Stars tests his Epsom Derby credentials by facing four rivals in Lingfield’s Trial on Saturday at 2.40pm.

The winner of last year’s Epsom Derby emerged from this race, although Adayar could only finish second behind Third Realm on that day.

Lingfield Derby Trial runners

Lionel

Trainer: David Menuisier Jockey: Jamie Spencer Age: 3 Weight: 9st 2lbs Draw: 3

Promising Lope De Vega colt who has shaped really well when twice placed at Newbury, ¾-length third of 12 to Natural World on latter occasion (11f) 21 days ago. Capable of better. Considered.

***

Natural World

Trainer: Charlie Appleby Jockey: Jack Mitchell Age: 3 Weight: 9st 2lbs Draw: 2

Frankel colt who made a highly pleasing debut when winning 12-runner maiden at Newbury (11f) 21 days ago. Sort to go on improving, but yard also have Walk of Stars in here.

***

United Nations

Trainer: Aidan O’Brien Jockey: Ryan Moore Age: 3 Weight: 9st 2lbs Draw: 1

Progressive Galileo colt who shaped well when 2 lengths fourth of 8 to Nahanni in listed race at Epsom (10.1f) 18 days ago, not ideally placed. Likely to improve further stepped up in trip.

****

Walk Of Stars

Trainer: Charlie Appleby Jockey: William Buick Age: 3 Weight: 9st 2lbs Draw: 5

Improving son of Dubawi who made it 2-3 when landing the odds in 3-runner conditions event at Newbury (10f) 20 days ago, despite still looking a bit green. Has plenty more to offer. Big player.

*****

Zechariah

Trainer: Martyn Meade Jockey: Tom Marquand Age: 3 Weight: 9st 2lbs Draw: 4

Made up into a useful performer last term when signing off with 1m Newbury novice win. 25/1, last of 6 to Native Trail in Craven Stakes at Newmarket (8f) on return though, so more is needed now.

Lingfield Derby Trial tips

Matt Chapman: WALK OF STARS has been hyped up since scoring at Newbury first time this season where he just did enough to deny Hafit. The general idea is that he’s got more to offer on the back of that effort and is an exciting prospect for Godolphin and Charlie Appleby. William Buick takes the ride.

Rory Delargy: I think Walk Of Stars looks bad value. Natural World has plenty of scope for improvement, I don’t like once-tried horses in the trials, I think you need a little bit of experience. UNITED NATIONS doesn’t look a superstar but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Aidan O’Brien get some improvement out of him.

Timeform: WALK OF STARS looked far from the finished article when making a winning return at Newbury so Charlie Appleby’s imposing Dubawi colt can take this step up in class in his stride. United Nations also has better days ahead of him and is feared most with this step up in trip a big plus for Aidan O’Brien’s Galileo colt. Lionel and Natural World both bring a fair bit of potential too in a most intriguing contest.

Ruby Walsh: Natural World won at Newbury last time out but Lionel was the eye-catcher in that race as he came flying home. I wouldn’t be surprised if they were to switch places. Walk Of Stars beat Hafit at Newbury but we saw New London blow out at Chester in the week so I’m going to take a chance on LIONEL.

Jason Weaver: UNITED NATIONS was a big eye-catcher last time at Epsom, when only getting going right on top of the line and is looking set for a big improvement on his second try over here. Walk of Stars looked to hang left quite badly on the flat galloping track in Newbury last time and surely this test will find him out. I think a little bit each-way at 50s for The Epsom Derby could look massive if the selection bolts up here first.
