Newcastle 14:00 – Fort Payne

My Oberon hasn’t quite delivered on the promise he originally showed. He ran a good race in Meydan last month against proper Group 1 horses. You have to think William Haggas had a plan to get him qualified for this race. He’s a worthy favourite. Bless Him is also a threat. Jamie Spencer gave him a great ride over course and distance last time out. However, I’m keen on Fort Payne with Gregory Benoist on board. He’s a good tactical ride on sharp tracks. He’s done well at Chantilly and Deauville recently. He’s overpriced based on his form.

Lingfield 14:20 – Whittle Le Woods

I’m keen on Whittle Le Woods for Michael Appleby. He was beaten last time out at Southwell and maybe on another day he would have won. Despite being drawn in stall ten, his previous form holds up. He finished behind Internationalangel at Newcastle previously. He’s got good gate speed and he could go very well.

Newcastle 14:35 – Harrys Bar

Ejtilaab is a likeable horse but I’m not sure about him on a straight track. I like Harrys Bar for Adrian McGuinness. There will likely be a strong gallop and that will suit Harrys Bar, who is a strong finisher. He won last time out at Dundalk too which is always a bonus.

Lingfield 14:55 – Vespasian

I saw Vespasian win at Newcastle in February and he’s the one to beat. He’s got good gate speed as well which will be ideal. Ross Coakley is a tidy jockey too.

Newcastle 15:10 – El Caballo

El Caballo is well clear on the ratings and he did well to win last time out at Lingfield. He travelled well but he hung off the bend. He’s won over course and distance so he’ll be hard to beat. He could be a different class to the rest of them here.

Newcastle 15:45 – Internationalangel

Highfield Princess is a great story but she may have peaked. Arousing will be far too keen so I’m with Internationalangel. If you take out the Wolverhampton run last time out, she’s the one to beat. She bolted up at Newcastle in February so I’m confident in backing her.

Newcastle 16:15 – Earlofthecotswolds

Sleeping Lion has a chance but I’m taken with Earlofthecotswolds. He’s won his last two at Kempton and this has been Nigel Twiston-Davies’ plan for him for a while. It’s a stiff track at Newcastle and it’ll suit him.

Newcastle 16:45 – Tyrrhenian Sea

It’s hard to see beyond Tyrrhenian Sea for Roger Varian and Andrea Atzeni. He should have won at Kempton but he had no luck. He’s open to improvement over his rivals.
