13:30 Cheltenham – Sizable Sam
ITV Wednesday mixes the Jumps and Flat code and starts with a handicap hurdle over an extended 2m 4f. Obviously hoping for a huge run from Chapmanshype, but I suspect a bigger run will come from SIZABLE SAM for Jeremy Scott and Nick Scholfield. The lightly raced seven-year-old has been dropped 1lb for a second at Ascot last time which seems very fair and was a decent winner at Wincanton the time before. Every chance.

13:50 Newmarket – Robjon
The Flat action begins with this handicap over 6f. This is tricky. ROBJON has a couple of juvenile runs to his name which would give him each-way claims for Richard Hannon and Rossa Ryan. Those came when fourth in a decent novice at Newbury and third in a handicap at Goodwood. He had a spin on the all-weather at the end of March but might have needed that and it was over 7f.
14:05 Cheltenham – Manofthemountain
ITV also show this limited handicap chase over an extended 2m 4f. The fabulous Coole Cody is back here but I’ll chance MANOFTHEMOUNTAIN for Emma Lavelle and Tom Bellamy. My hope is fairly handicapped on 142 and ran really well in the Paddy Power Gold Cup when eighth behind Midnight Shadow. He wasn’t at his best at Kempton last time but everything is in place for a bold show.

14:25 Newmarket – Secret State
A maiden that often throws up a decent horse in the Wood Ditton over 1m. Obviously guessing but SECRET STATE is bred to be decent for Charlie Appleby and William Buick. The son of Dubawi cost 525,000gns for Godolphin and is related to the useful closer Onassis. Out of a disqualified ‘winner’ of the 1000 Guineas, he should be able to run a bit.
15:00 Newmarket – Bellosa
This is the Group 3 Abernant Stakes sprint over 6f. Seems like a changing of the guard in sprinters here with many of the old names from recent seasons missing. I’ll chance BELLOSA for the excellent Jane Chapple-Hyam stable. The four-year-old looked a star in her first two wins before struggling at Royal Ascot and then finishing second over 7f at Kempton. I hope she’s banged out in front here and might be hard to catch under Adam Kirby.

15:35 Newmarket – Native Trail
Finally the big one of the day in the 2000 Guineas trial which is the Group 3 Craven Stakes over 1m. This won’t take long. With just seven runners there is no each-way angle and NATIVE TRAIL is surely going to be very hard to beat. Charlie Appleby told me in Dubai a couple of weeks ago his big gun was in fine shape and as the Dewhurst hero he really should be able to beat this lot as he carries no penalty. Today’s contest should put the 2,000 Guineas ante-post favourite spot on for the big race itself. If you fancy him for the Colts’ Classic at the end of the month, maybe back him before he scores. He’s sure to shorten if even slightly impressive in this trial.
