14:40 Naas – Juno Beach

I love pitting my wits in these early season big field turf handicaps and although only 13 go to post here for this five furlong event it still looks something of a conundrum. It will be interesting to see if there is a market move for the nicely bred and lightly raced Vivaia.

The daughter of Kodiac raced over six and seven furlongs in her formative season without making much impression, but they were in some decent contests and the drop to five furlongs off a rating of 69 looks eminently playable.

Joint top weight Super Cub and outsider Gallow Hill also interest me, but in the end I plumped for this son of Exceed and Excel. All of his races have come on the all-weather at Castletown River track, but he is bred to be better on turf and found the sixth furlong just a shade too far on his last start in February. A full 5lbs lower in the handicap here, the selection could prove the value each-way play in a fast run race.

14:45 Ascot – Ocean Line

Several of these juvenile hurdles have been waiting for the spring ground to arrive and the likes of Magistrato and the lightly raced Rewired could take another step forward on this better surface. However, the Alan King selection has been on my mind since running well in a Listed hurdle at Wetherby behind the smart Porticello where he still had every chance between the final two flights before weakening.

Addosh has franked the form this week and the key to this useful dual purpose performer will be the forecast top of the ground. If the odds allow I wouldn’t be adverse to having a saver on the Alan King trained Big Boy Bobby. He still looked green over his obstacles and slightly out of his depth in the Grade Two Adonis Hurdle at Kempton Park behind Knight Salute, but he commands huge respect here off a rating of just 113 which could underplay his talent.

15:01 Carlisle – Miss Milano

The drop from two and three quarter miles to a stiff two at the Cumbrian track looks sure to see Timetoroe in a much better light and I can see Abbie McCain trying to dictate matters from the front here and testing her rivals from the foot of the long climb home. She has solid claims and I couldn’t put any of you off her, but Miss Milano could be chucked in here with Nicky Richards employing the 10lbs claimer Conor Rabbitt.

That takes her mark down to 93 and combined with this quicker ground, ran well on good to soft on her career debut, we could see a different version of this daughter of Milan. Her breeding suggests that two and a half miles plus and fences will suit her in time, but she has shown a high cruising speed in all of her races to date and with only five runs under her belt, the best is surely yet to come.

16:01 Limerick – Brandy Harbour

At first glance this two and a half mile handicap chase looks a horrible betting race to meddle in with a whole host of disappointing sorts set to line up, hence the reason while several of them are well treated. They include Scheu Time, down from 128 to 115, and eased in class and top weight Dinny Lacey. The last named certainly wasn’t disgraced behind the progressive Celebre D’Allen at Warwick last time out, but is hardly the most consistent and both of his victories have come on very deep ground.

The selection also acts with plenty of give, but I have been waiting for the scenario where he runs over two and a half miles on a drying surface and those conditions have arrived today. He was a real eye catcher over two miles on good ground at Thurles in February when running on strongly to get to within a length of Hollybank King and a similar performance here would put him right in the mix.
