13:55 Mind Hunter

MIND HUNTER achieved a fair level of form on the Flat when trained by Richard Hannon and he produced his best effort yet over hurdles when filling the runner-up spot at Doncaster last time. That was his handicap debut and he kept on well in first-time blinkers to pass the post only two and a half lengths behind the winner. That was a big step in the right direction and he remains one to keep on the right side here from only 3 lb higher in the weights.

14:30 Grivetana

GRIVETANA was a big disappointment on her debut for the Paul Nicholls yard at Wincanton last month, but it’s far too soon to be writing her off after just one bad run. An easy winner on her only start in France before joining Nicholls, she is clearly capable of better than she was able to show last time and the experience there is unlikely to have been lost on her. This looks a weak race on paper and Grivetana is well worth another chance to resume her progress.

15:01 Mr Glass

MR GLASS is another horse from the Paul Nicholls stable who needs to bounce back from a below-par display at Wincanton, finishing only sixth when sent off favourite for his handicap debut there last month. Nevertheless, he should find life easier today now back in novice company and it’s worth remembering just how promising he had looked in three previous starts over hurdles, winning the first two before finishing third in the Tolworth Novices’ Hurdle at Sandown. On that evidence he should be well capable of defying a double penalty.

15:31 Just Your Type

JUST YOUR TYPE was out of his depth when finishing well held in the Eider Handicap Chase at Newcastle last time, but this represents a significant drop in grade and he is well worth another chance to take advantage of his sliding mark. For context, he is now 7 lb lower in the weights than when filling the runner-up spot at Uttoxeter in November, so his chance is an obvious one on paper if his jumping holds together (prone to mistakes over fences).

16:05 Give Us A Swig

GIVE US A SWIG shaped a bit better than the bare result when down the field at Exeter last time, travelling strongly for a long way before the gruelling conditions appeared to take their toll late on. His stamina won’t be quite so severely tested today and he showed enough when second on his previous start at Ffos Las to suggest there are races to be won with him from a BHA mark of 90. This looks as good an opportunity as any in a contest which trainer Sean Curran won 12 months ago with Arthur’s Reuben.

16:35 Stanley Pincombe

STANLEY PINCOMBE showed improved form to open his account over hurdles at Warwick 11 days ago, hitting the front on the approach to the second last and keeping going well from there to land the spoils by half a length. He can race from the same mark here and the step up in trip is likely to eke out a bit more improvement, so another bold bid seems assured for the Chris Gordon yard which continues in top form (six winners from last 18 runners).

17:05 Sister Saint

SISTER SAINT has plenty to recommend her on pedigree and could be up to making a winning debut in the finale. She is by Martaline (sire of Dynaste and Disko) and a half-sister to five winners, including Irish Saint who showed smart form over both hurdles and fences for the Paul Nicholls stable. Admittedly, it’s unlikely that Sister Saint will ever reach that level herself, but she won’t need to be a superstar to win this bumper given that those with previous experience set just a modest standard.
