13:00 Cartonne

CARTONNE has finished placed in all three starts over hurdles and he proved at least as good as ever when filling the runner-up spot at Wetherby last time, rallying well on the run-in to pass the post only five and a half lengths behind the winner. That form puts him right in the mix here and there would certainly be no more deserving winner for Donald McCain, who could hardly be in better form with 11 winners in the last 14 days.

13:35 Ubetya

UBETYA shaped a bit better than the bare result when third on his latest outing at Wincanton, getting into contention but making no further impression after a mistake four out. That was just his second start for the Paul Nicholls yard (formerly trained by Laura Morgan) after previously finding one too good at Plumpton in February, when beaten only three and a quarter lengths. He is now 2 lb lower in the weights and this looks a good opportunity for him to get off the mark over fences.

14:10 Finisk River

FINISK RIVER ran no sort of race when down the field at Doncaster last time, but the heavy going possibly wasn’t in his favour and he is entitled to strip fitter with that first run for three months under his belt. Today’s conditions should play more to his strengths and he has been given a major chance by the handicapper, now 6 lb lower in the weights than when hitting the frame at Cheltenham in November. In a wide-open contest, he is worth a chance to bounce back to form.

14:45 Tim Pat

TIM PAT looked a good staying prospect when making a successful chasing debut at Carlilse last month, forging clear after the final flight to win by four and a quarter lengths (eased down close home). This will be tougher following an 8 lb rise in the weights, but he is very much the type to go on improving over fences, particularly as his stamina is drawn out further. He should relish today’s test and can win again before going on to bigger and better things.

15:20 Letthetruthbeknown

LETTHETRUTHBEKNOWN showed fairly useful form when making a winning start to life over hurdles at Uttoxeter in December, quickening clear from two out to land the spoils by four lengths in decisive fashion. Admittedly, she needs to bounce back from a lesser effort at Catterick last time, but this is a weak race with only three runners going to post. She has the best form on offer, so it will be disappointing if she can’t defy a penalty to resume winning ways.

15:55 Thegallantway

THEGALLANTWAY has been struggling for form over fences this season, but it’s far too soon to be writing him off. He has often been held back by his jumping over the larger obstacles, so the switch back to hurdles today might spark a revival and he is certainly well handicapped judged on the pick of his efforts in this sphere. Runner-up in a competitive handicap at Ascot in February 2020, he is now 6 lb lower in the weights than he was then and very much one to bear in mind.
