Golden Miller Novices’ Chase (13:30) – Bob Olinger

Its hard to forget the devastating display served up by BOB OLINGER in last year’s Ballymore and few will be scarred more by the memory of his backend than Harry Cobden on Bravemansgame who wearing a head cam that day allowed us the most illuminating of glimpses into the brilliance of a horse leaving dust in his wake despite over racing int he early part of the race. Two from two since his switch to the larger obstacles he has been short of that spectacular best so far but the return to Cheltenham and the better ground will see him take another step forward ahead of an exuberant and clearly supremely talented Galopin Des Champs who in my view may just find himself in Bravemansgame’s shoes come the business end.

Pertemps Final (14:10) – Sire Du Berlais

Two time winner of this race SIRE DU BERLAIS ran an absolute cracker in last year’s Stayers Hurdle to finish second to Flooring Porter and back in the calmer waters of his favoured handicap, I fancy him to get up the hatrick. 4lb higher than when last winning this race off top weight in 2020 his jockey Rob James takes off 7lb to put him right in the mix again and with the race set to tap into his abundant stamina the 10 year old can roll back the years to give Gordon Elliott a fifth win in the race in the last six years.

Festival Trophy Chase (14:50) – Allaho

Near enough unbeatable over the intermediate trip ALLAHO is one of the bankers of the week and its hard to see anything posing a significant problem to last year’s winner of this race. Two from two since he ended last season with an admirable runner effort to Chacun Pour Soi over an inadequate two miles at Punchestown, he looks every bit as good as he was last year and I’d expect another strong front running performance to give his trainer Willie Mullins a fifth win in the race since 2016.

Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle (15:30) – Thyme Hill

A very open renewal in which a compelling case could be made for any number of these on a going day but trying to decipher when that day will be is half the battle for a talented bit quirky lineup. Will 2019 winner Paisley Park jump off on terms? Can last year’s winner Flooring Porter handle the crowd? What happened to Klassical Dream last time and will the real Champ please stand up? With so many questions to answer the reliable and ultra consistent THYME HILL may just provide the answer. Philip Hobbs’ stable star has an excellent record at Cheltenham including very solid Festival form and having been kept fresh and primed for the race there’s every reason to believe the best could yet still be to come for this progressive eight year old.

Plate Handicap Hurdle (16:10) – The Glancing Queen

Lightly raced novice chasers have a good record in this race in recent years and I think THE GLANCING QUEEN will continue the trend on her fourth chase start. A winner of her first two runs over fences against her own sex, this likeable mare stepped up to finish an excellent second to L’Homme Presse in the Dipper over this course and distance on New Years Day. Trainer Alan King and jockey Tom Cannon are already off the mark on day one with a win for Edwardstone in the Arkle and they can go in again with a mare for whom the best is surely still to come.

Dawn Run Novices’ Hurdle (16:50) – Dinoblue

Willie Mullins has dominated this race since the inaugural running in 2016 with only Henry De Bromhead’s Tellmesomethinggirl able to break the stranglehold last year. This year he fields seven runners in a bid to ensure the prize will return to Closutton and I think the once raced DINOBLUE may be the one to bring it home. Impossibly professional to surge clear on her hurdles debut at Clonmel in January, she’ll likely face different conditions to the heavy ground encountered that day but you just get the impression this well related JP McManus owned mare could be something special and Im hoping she shows that today.

Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir (17:30) – Mister Coffey

Nicky Henderson has enjoyed a fabulous start to the week and MISTER COFFEY can add to his tally in the Kim Muir under talented amateur Sam Waley-Cohen. A solid start to his chasing career has seen him placed on all three starts to date leaving him with a very workable mark of 137 in this contest. Whilst competitive over the intermediate trip he has faced the last twice, it’s the promise of untapped potential stepping up to 3m2f that really swings the vote in his favour. A tendency to jump left should also suit a return to a left handed track and we could see an entirely different proposition up to a distance he’s surely been crying out for all season.
