AND HERE’S THE REST OF YOUR TOP TIPS FOR DAY 3

Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle (13:30) – Sir Gerhard

The step up to the longer 2m 5f trip here could see Sir Gerhard’s in an even more positive light. The ability to take lay up and travel smoothly through this race, before burning them off up the hill has become the tactic of many high-class winners of this race in recent years. I expect Sir Gerhard to follow suit. Last year’s Champion Bumper winner showed he had speed to burn in both hurdle wins to date and I expect the step up in trip to aid him in ironing out the jumping errors we saw last time. The potential to take a lead in the race rather than have to make all could also help his chances. He should prove too classy for this field.

Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase (14:10) – LHomme Presse

LHomme Presse may not have had the chance to put real top-notchers to the sword just yet but he has done everything asked of him over fences so far. He has excelled over 2m 4f  including when running away with the Grade 1 Scilly Isles Novices Chase last time, but shapes as if three miles is well within his compass.

An impressive performance in the Dipper at Cheltenham on New Years Day further boosts his profile and gives him the edge over a favourite for whom the return to Cheltenham may be a concern.

NEW TO PADDY POWER NEWS?

Coral Cup Hurdle (14:50) – Saint Felicien

Saint Felicien looks a smart prospect for Gordon Elliott and the burgeoning Robcour string so it may pay to take advantage of what might be the last time we’ll see him in a handicap. The form of his debut win at Auteuil before changing hands has been well advertised and a smart win at Gowran Park was followed by a solid runner up effort to the experienced Darasso in the Limestone Lad Hurdle at Naas.

Chasing a fast pace that day over a trip that proved too sharp for him, was probably his undoing and the step up to this longer trip should see him to better effect. A mark of 149 for a horse considered a Champion Hurdle prospect at the start of the season is too good to pass over.

Champion Chase (15:30) – Shishkin

A brilliant renewal of the race features an outstanding headline act in two time Festival winner Shishkin who can maintain his unbeaten record for the hatrick. The winner of last year’s Arkle has strengthened up and come forward again this year after a wind operation last summer which was very much in evidence when managing to repel the challenge of a foot perfect Energuemene at Ascot in the Clarence House Chase in January.

His defeat of his closest rival in the market on terms which played to the strengths of Willie Mullins’ challenger leaves me in no doubt he can confirm that superiority back at a track that will bring out the very best in him.

Cross Country Chase (16:10) – Tiger Roll

There are younger legs to contend with in this year’s line up for three time winner of the race Tiger Roll but I think the dual Grand National winning 12 year old can bring the house down with a sixth Festival win. Ruled out of a bid for a third Grand National due to what connections view as an unfair weight, it is impossible to assess the recent form of this Cheltenham legend such is his tendency to turn up an entirely different proposition in this specialist discipline.

I also have a soft spot for fellow veteran Potters Corner who has run some eye catching races in this division and came agonisingly close to winning one over course and distance in December.

Grand Annual Chase (16:50) – Sky Pirate

I fancy last year’s winner Sky Pirate to run another big race back in a contest that sets up ideally for this strong travelling big-field specialist. He’s 4lb higher this year and comes off the back of a slightly less fruitful season than last year, but back at a track he excels at, with the forecast strong pace scenario to suit, he’s worth siding with.

Champion Bumper (17:30) – Facile Vega

As six time Festival winner Quevega’s biggest fan, I was thrilled to see her second foal Facile Vega look to have inherited every bit of her brilliance. In two starts to date he has taken apart the fields including a strong opposing cast in the Future Stars bumper at the Dublin Racing Festival in February. He is clearly held in supremely high regard but has surprised even his staunchest fans with just how impressively a long striding galloping horse quickened up further to put the race to bed last time. Envoi Allen landed the same race at Leopardstown in 2019 before going on to Champion Bumper success a month later and I’d be amazed if there’s anything classy enough to prevent Facile Vega from doing the same.
