14:20 Huntingdon – Parisienne Gold

Burdened with a 7lbs penalty, the Skelton’s Signal Point won’t find it easy giving the weight away to his rivals, while the O’Brien pair, Becky The Boo and Herewegohoney, have yet to convince me from a handful of outings.

Seven in the race is a slight disappointment, but I think that there could well be a bundle of improvement in the Richard Hobson trained mare making her hurdling debut here. She showed on her career debut that stamina would be a big asset to her and in two subsequent outings the combination of a soft pace and pulling hard at the head of affairs have simply not suited her. Up in trip and hopefully settling in mid pack could see her take a massive step forward and I feel she could be the surprise package here on her hurdling debut.

14:38 Sedgefield – Tanora

This staying handicap hurdle had a nice shape to it earlier in the week and the only shame is that that a maximum of seven will go to post now. Top weight, Midnight Mary looks sure to set off and try and make all and replicate her two wins at Fakenham, but a mark of 105 requires a bit more, albeit against mainly exposed rivals.

Thatbeatsbanagher relished the step up in trip over the course and distance last time out and looks a big danger, even though he doesn’t look a straightforward ride and so I have come down on the side of Sam England’s charge even though she remains a maiden after nine starts under rules. However, this race could well be set up for the seven-year-old who is seemingly getting the hang of things and looks an out and out stayer judged on her last two starts over C&D. The ground was patently too quick last time out and this sterner test will suit with no weight on her back.

15:40 Leopardstown – Elusive Touch

Regular readers will know that I like to pour over these big field handicap hurdles at a mid range level and this unexposed mare fits the bill in this two and a half mile event.

Following an 84-day break, I thought that the lightly raced seven-year-old mare was a real eye catcher when making stealthy late headway at Punchestown in January. That run should have put her straight for this assignment and off a one pound lower mark she looks more than reasonably treated in a race which has more quantity than quality. Of her 14 rivals, a market move for We’llgowats should be noted, while Cool Rain will relish the step back up to two and a half miles.

16:40 Huntingdon – Gumbo Flyer

This looks the weaker of the two divisions of the staying hurdle and as such the likes of top weight Celtic Tara and the disappointing Blended Stealth could easily make their presence felt in what is sure to be a severe test of stamina on the prevailing ground.

However, this is probably best left to the Paul Webber charge following a cracking run over the course and distance four weeks ago. On that occasion the six-year-old probably did a bit too much too soon and after his chance had gone, when jumping to the right at the second last, his jockey was quite easy on him. That kindness looks likely to repaid here off a 3lbs lower mark in the hope that the selection settles better and is delivered much later in the day.
