Horse racing tips: Fran Berry’s best Friday night bets for Dundalk

He’s had 9 winners over the last two Friday night cards at Dundalk and the Sporting Life’s columnist Fran Berry has a couple of major fancies tonight.

16:55 – Sister Lola

A claiming race to start and it’s never easy. We’ve documented before how James McAuley targets these races and he has two entered in Cedar Rapids, SISTER LOLA and Hightown Heights and it’s the middle one I like most. She was a course and distance winner in a higher grade a few starts back and comes out well in the rating against the others. Looks to have the perfect draw in box six also. Hodd’s Girl is worth a mention if she doesn’t blow the start.

17:30 – National Generaux

A 6f maiden where top-weight Tawaazon ran a solid race when second a few weeks back in a handicap but as a four-year-old has to give a good bit of weight away to the three-year-olds. Hypernova has run well in defeat too and breaks from trap five while Johnny Murtagh’s Gloria Rosa is worth a look despite the poor draw in stall 15. The one for me however is NATIONAL GENERAUX who wears first-time blinkers and drops right back in trip from stall four.

18:00 – King of Cashel

An extra-place race for a competitive 2m handicap where the Jamie Codd-ridden KING OF CASHEL fits the bill in stall one.  He’s run some good races in defeat and looked to idle in front last time when fading in the final couple of furlongs. He can deliver for Fozzie Stack tonight. Walking on Glass is a decent hurdler ad beat Princess Zoe a couple of years ago when she was just handicapping.

18:30 – Jake Peter

A 1m 4f handicap where Paddy is paying an extra place again. New Girl in Town drops in class as does Razdan and the Virginian with Kevin Manning booked while Itsalonglongroad returns to this code having been hurdling. However, the one with the best recent Dundalk form is JAKE PETER and 7lb claimer J Coen has been booked to ride.

19:00 – The Grey Wizard (NAP)

A 10f maiden for the penultimate race on the card where Dermot Weld’s Haroya will be popular. She made a late-season debut at Cork last September when eighth to Trevaunance and then finished fourth here to Beauty Amazed over 11f two weeks ago She could take a bit of beating if she improves for that run.

I’m siding with THE GREY WIZARD –  who despite finishing down the field on his only run at Navan – ran really well at this track in a barrier trial finishing close to Sir Antonio who has finished second in two good maidens at Leopardstown since. He was green that day and despite being drawn in stall 13, this son of Caravaggio – whose offspring thrive on this surface – will do for me. He’s my nap of the night.

19:30 – Acquiescent

A 7f handicap where 14 may go to post in another extra place race. No Nay Alexander was a good winner on debut here but had a horrible run at this venue after that and may lack for experience against some smart rivals and the same could apply to Je T’ai Porte. Both could prove to be well handicapped in the grade, but this looks a deep enough race. I’ll stick with ACQUIESCENT who did us a favour last time and Colin Keane rides.

He’s 6lb higher than that win but is still below his ceiling rating from last year and has a decent draw in stall four. Talbot will pop up in one of thee races soon but isn’t as reliable as the selection.

20:00 – In Ecstasy

The feature race on the card is the Listed 1m contest where eight runners are declared. Absolute Ruler won well on debut but disappointed after that and is maybe best watched. Ger Lyons’ Juncture has good turf form but steps up in trip tonight and hasn’t run since last July.

That leads me to side with IN ECSTASY. Trained by Joseph O’Brien, he’s been in good form at this venue over the winter. He just seems to do enough to get his head in front and looks a bit of value to bring up the hat-trick of wins.

20:30 – The Pargey Bee

A very competitive three-year-old only handicap to end the card and Paddy’s paying an extra place to help us out. The top-weight Simply Glorious could be different class to these but has an awful draw in stall 13.  Singsong Lady should be two from two, but was disqualified last time for causing interference.

I’m siding with Colin Keane’s mount, THE PARGEY BEE. He’s been running well in handicaps, has been gelded since his last run and has what could be an ideal draw in stall one. He’s my selection in the lucky last.
