13:00 – Step to the Top

STEP TO THE TOP had some fairly useful form in bumpers for Noel Williams and was well backed on her handicap debut on just her third start for this yard at Market Rasen 16 days ago. It was little surprise given the mark she was allotted, and she was in the process of showing improved form before falling at the second-last. The result was still up in the air, but she was vying for the lead, and should have no problem defying this mark at some point. Pilsdon Pen, who arrives at the top of his game, is feared most.

13:35 – At a Pinch

This doesn’t look the deepest race of its type, so a chance is taken on hurdling debutante AT A PINCH, who reached a fairly useful level of form on the Flat for John & Thady Gosden last year, and starts out in this sphere at an ordinary level. She commands a market check. Scudamore hasn’t got the same standard of Flat form to call upon, but wasn’t beaten far on his hurdling debut at Doncaster, and can put that experience to good use.

14:10 – Manucci

MANUCCI landed a significant gamble with a runaway success at Sandown last week and, while he was allowed to get away from his rivals under this excellent conditional, it was still a dominant win. Due to the conditions of that race Manucci is able to race from the same mark now (due to go up 9 lb) and he will be hard to oppose if this doesn’t come too quickly. Astroman was a good second over course and distance two weeks ago and can follow the selection home.

14:45 – Galop de Chasse

GALOP DE CHASSE progressed again as he recorded his second win since joining Venetia Williams at Ludlow a fortnight ago and he appears to have been excellently placed once more. He jumped soundly and went for home some way out, keeping up the gallop and asserting away from his rivals after jumping the last. A subsequent 5 lb rise in the weights looks fair and he seems sure to launch another bold bid. Top-weight Golden Boy Grey has made a bright start over fences and can pose the biggest threat.

15:20 – Hillfinch

This looks a modest mares’ hurdle and it is very hard to get away from the claims of HILLFINCH, who made a winning start in bumpers in September and also placed in listed company in that sphere. She showed plenty to work on when runner-up on hurdling debut over course and distance, too, pulling well clear of the reopposing Galante de Romay in third. Hillfinch should be incredibly hard to beat with normal improvement. Rapaport is another to consider.

15:55 – Lots of Luck

Kim Bailey has his string in excellent order at present and LOTS OF LUCK is taken to provide the yard with yet another winner. He was ridden more prominently and went with more zest than he has previously this season when resuming winning ways over course and distance two weeks ago and he could be a tough nut to crack if David Bass is allowed to control the race in his follow-up bid. Dorking Lad looks the chief threat though Lord Sparky is always worth a second look at this venue.
