Hathlool never landed a blow when fourth of five at Chelmsford last month but it’s easy enough to overlook that effort as he failed to settle off a farcical early gallop. Hathlool had done well to overcome a steady early tempo when winning at Wolverhampton on his previous start and he still looks to be on a fair mark. He could still have more to offer for Mick Appleby.
Balqaa had been given a breathing operation prior to her reappearance here last month, and, in first-time cheekpieces, she showed improved form to score over course and distance. Balqaa had to be switched over a furlong out, but she kept on strongly to lead inside the final 100 yards and was well on top at the finish. She is a relatively lightly-raced four-year-old and still has more to offer, so a 2 lb rise in the weights looks lenient and should not be enough to stop her following up.
Native Angel showed plenty of promise when runner-up at Lingfield on debut. She dwelt coming out of the stalls, showing her inexperience, but she started to get the hang of things and kept on nicely into second close home, clocking a good sectional time. She should be difficult to beat with that experience under her belt.
Purple Power catches the eye on her first start for George Boughey having left Mick Quinn. Purple Power is fairly treated off a mark just 3 lb higher than the one she defied at Chelmsford in August, but she ran to a higher level when hitting the frame in a couple of maidens in 2020 and if her excellent new trainer can get her back to that sort of form she will be difficult to beat.
Triggered has been in good form since the turn of the year, hitting the frame on all three starts. He was beaten less than a length in fourth over this course and distance last month and backed that up with two creditable efforts at Southwell, catching the eye on the latest occasion when faring best of those held up. He has been dropped 1 lb, so is now only 1 lb above his last winning mark and looks capable of cashing in.
High Velocity made an encouraging start to his career when runner-up at Yarmouth in September and he built on that to score at Chelmsford a month later. High Velocity was well on top at the finish there in a race that is working out well, so, with plenty still to come, he looks well up to defying a penalty.
