The experiment with stepping Saldier up to two a half miles and three miles didn’t work and he’s now back to his best trip. He is getting 2lbs off Teahupoo, Quilixios and Darasso. He is not consistent but he did win the Galway hurdle off a mark of 155 last July and won a Grade 3 at Tipperary in October. Those races were on decent ground but he did win his maiden hurdle here as a juvenile on heavy ground.
Melon deserves to be favourite on ratings but he hasn’t won since December 2019 and is only 3-25 over jumps despite most of his form being at Grade 1 level. I couldn’t take him at odds on. Chatham Street Lad is the most interesting one as he relishes testing ground and I think the trip suits. Obviously he bolted up in the Caspian Caviar Gold Cup off 141 and easily won a Limerick Grade 3 last season over 3m on heavy ground, beating Defi Bleu and Full Time Score.

This is a cracking race. Teahupoo and Quilixios fought it out at Limerick over Christmas, with Teahupoo coming out on top. It was a really tactical race and I fancy Quilixios to reverse the form. He’s just coming into form now and Henry de Bromhead has a handle on him. I like Teahupoo but I can’t get over his run at Fairyhouse last year when he lost against Jeff Kidder. Quilixios will do me at a solid price.

This is the perfect chance for Melon to win but I’m not sure about taking him at his price. You’d be very disappointed if he didn’t win but I’m a fan of Chatham Street Lad. He’s a good price and he’d be the only one I’d back.
