Several have possibilities but the vote goes to YOU’RE COOL, who recorded his eighth course win when forging clear over C&D last month and a 3lb rise for that success looks fair. The other last-time-out winner Thegreyvtrain is feared most, though Amazing Amaya was an eyecatching second behind the selection last time and could be a big factor if she gets some luck. Others to consider are Nagasaki Dream and the handicap newcomer Nantosuelta.
The one that stands out is AXEL JACKLIN, who justified favouritism with his dominant display in a classified event over C&D last month and may well be able to repeat the trick back in a handicap. The main threat could come from Barrington, who is on a very dangerous mark and has run several creditable races on AW since October.
There should still be more to come from the lightly raced BLUE ARTEMIS, who is less exposed than her rivals and has the added bonus of promising apprentice Harry Davies taking off a useful 7lb. Diamond Jill, who has a good record over C&D, is feared most ahead of Vocatus and Dark Esteem.
The signs look good for last year’s winner NATE THE GREAT, who is on a workable mark and whose recent efforts are very positive. Chipiron is in good form but he’s back up in trip/class, whereas Zeeband (second choice) and Military Two Step are 2m winners who remain fairly unexposed.
Charlie Appleby holds a very strong hand with leading form contenders Carnival Girl and Show Lights complemented by well-bred debutante Willow Cove. However, they are quite hard to split unless the market signals provide clearcut clues. A solid alternative is the Gosden filly GIA DARLING, who is bang there on the figures and should relish this new trip. Show Lights is the tentative second choice.
Last year’s winner POWER OF STATES is taken to bounce back from his Boxing Day disappointment and capitalise on a handy mark. He looks particularly well treated if Harry Davies’ useful 7lb claim is taken into account. Second choice is Palavecino, who has a great strike-rate in handicaps. Civil Law (third choice) may be capable of further progress, while good mares Virgin Snow and Serenading are also in the mix.
Hazel returned to form with a creditable second at Chelmsford last month and she’s respected on this drop back in trip/grade, but preference is for Brett Johnson’s unexposed four-year-old DEMBE, who scored in good style on his handicap debut at Kempton last Saturday and is open to further progress.
Granted a better trip EL BELLO could well reverse Kempton placings with Subjective Value (second choice) and Decorated Doll who warrant respect all the same. Pluperfect is open to improvement.
