William Buick has decided to ride GLOBAL STORM in this competitive handicap from the Charlie Appleby runners. His form early last season was progressive with good runs at Newmarket and Ascot before things didn’t go his way in the Ebor at York. There were genuine excuses for his poor run when down the field in the November Handicap at Doncaster, and a rating of 102 and his ability to run well fresh can see him challenge in the opener.

15:10 – Bendoog (Mark Milligan)
There are plenty of unexposed types in the UAE 2000 Guineas with BENDOOG my second selection on Friday for Bhupat Seemar and Tadgh O’Shea. The son of Gun Runner made a winning debut on a non-Carnival card here last month, making all the running to score under James Doyle on that occasion. I think this horse is open to further improvement and with a perfect inside draw, he can dominate from the front and remain unbeaten for connections.
16:20 – Salute The Soldier (Mark Milligan)
The Curlin Stakes is a very interesting contest where I’m looking to take on Rebel’s Romance following his disappointing run on his return last month. SALUTE THE SOLIDER goes so well on this dirt track and having needed his comeback run, he has the tactical speed and ability to see off the Appleby runner. It might even be worth backing this horse each-way ante-post right now for the Dubai World Cup, because if you take-out Hot Rod Charlie and Life Is Good from the big one, he could represent value to run a big race in late March.

16:55 – Passion And Glory (James Shortt)
Lord Glitters is looking for back-to-back wins in the Singspiel Stakes with David O’Meara’s runner hoping to improve on his recent fourth-place finish in the Al Rashidiya over course and distance last month. Zakouski returns to the track for Charlie Appleby and was second in this contest last year and was also well behind Lord Glitters in the Bahrain Trophy last November. Saeed Bin Suroor has a good record in this race and runs both PASSION AND GLORY and Bedouin’s Story with the mount of Pat Cosgrave getting my verdict at a nice each-way price.
The son of Cape Cross battled gamely to win the Glorious Stakes at Goodwood last summer and looked to need the run on his reappearance here last month over a longer trip. The drop down in distance looks a positive for me, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Pat Cosgrave races forward and makes good use of his stamina. Elsewhere, Bedouin’s Story should be played late by Frankie Dettori and will improve for his comeback fifth to Desert Fire – that race also saw Royal Fleet and Art Du Val only separated by neck and those two are also serious players for the Appleby team.

17:30 – Al Tariq (James Shortt)
Doug Watson has dominated this race in recent seasons with four victories in the past five years at the Carnival, which included success with AL TARIQ last year under Pat Dobbs. The son of Oasis Dream ended last season with a creditable sixth-place effort in the Group 1 Golden Shaheen and has returned to the track this season with back-to-back wins at Jebel Ali and here in Meydan since November.
He found plenty from the front here last month in the Dubawi Stakes with Freedom Fighter, Ibn Malik and Canvassed well beaten in behind. This race will be run at a strong pace with Bet Law looking to improve from his debut victory here in Conditions company last month, while Meraas is stepping out of handicap company but has plenty to find on official ratings. Al Tariq has been ultra-consistent for connections, is the best horse here, and should hold the form with his rivals from the Dubawi Stakes to win the finale.
