Balkeo is on debut for Nicky Henderson and the Donnelly’s here. He was second in a couple of conditions hurdles at Auteuil last Spring. He’s had a wind operation but has it to do with Shallwehaveonemore. He beat Walking on Air in his bumper at Kempton and Walking On Air is now a single-figure price for the Ballymore. He was second at Ascot on his hurdles debut when too keen. He was a bit too keen as well when stepped up to Grade 1 level when fourth and well beaten behind Constitution Hill. The heavy ground wouldn’t have been ideal though. He will appreciate getting back on better ground and while a Supreme entry is probably flying too high, he is a horse than will make up into a really good handicapper (at the very least) once learning to settle a little better in his races.
It is significant that Harry Cobden chooses Dolos over Tamaroc Du Mathan, as I thought Tamaroc Du Mathan was very interesting back down to 2m off the back of a wind operation. Moonlighter won this race last season off a 7lb higher mark and the forecast rain on Friday will help his cause. Dolos was a length second to Moonlighter last year but he now finds himself on a 15lb lower mark. He has barely beaten a rival in the interim but he did run at Grade 2 and Grade 1 level and two of his three starts this season have been over 2m3f. Dolos won this race in 2020 off 157 and in 2019 off 149.
Pic D’Orhy is rated 155 while L’Homme Presse is rated 154. Chasing didn’t really work out for Pic D’Orhy last season, but he has been better this time out, winning two of his three starts, including in a Grade 2 at Ascot last time. His only defeat this season was when falling at Newbury when going well on the front end. L’Homme Presse would be the one for me, despite conditions being a little more suitable for Pic D’Orhy. L’Homme Presse was very good when winning the Grade 2 Dipper at Cheltenham last time and he jumped particularly well. There is a slight concern that he jumped left handed when he won at Ascot but while going left handed at Cheltenham would have helped, it wasn’t noticeable. He is the more solid option as Pic D’Orhy can hit a fence hard.

Saint Palais is interesting getting 11lbs off Ahoy Senor (Saint Palais is rated 145 and Ahoy Senor is 152). He is 3-3 over fences but has been getting the four-year-old allowance in those races and this is much tougher. Ahoy Senor should be difficult to beat if running to the level we know he is capable of. At Newbury, he was relentless and wasn’t disgraced at Kempton when second to Bravemansgame on a track that clearly didn’t suit.
Fiveandtwenty is 3-4 over hurdles at Musselburgh and did win her only start on the flat here also. She was outclassed in the Grade 1 Juvenile Hurdle at Aintree and in a four-year-old mares handicap at Cheltenham but she was running off 132 there. It looked like she needed the race here on New Year’s Day. She will be primed for this and I’m hoping she gets away on the front end.

The Cob is a big price. He won the Grade 2 River Don at Doncaster last year but that was a weak renewal. He was a non runner earlier in the season on good ground but ran a cracker here in December, when second to Pileon off 136. He disappointed when the 11/4 favourite at Doncaster over the Christmas period but the Pauling yard can be very in and out. The Cob runs off the same mark as that second place in November and with the six places on offer and him being near rag of the field, he is worth a small each-way play.
