Ucanaver will be hard to beat if somewhere near the form she showed when winning by just over 7l at Worcester in October but both her subsequent runs were arguably a shade disappointing and she has something to prove now. She is opposed with FIRE LAKE, who looked fairly useful in bumpers and effectively lost all chance when stumbling badly mid-race on her hurdling debut. Rock Of Fame is also a key player.
There could be major improvement to come from ON THE BANDWAGON, who has a very handy opening mark judged on his Irish point effort that has worked out well. He looks the type to do well in handicaps for Jonjo O’Neill. Fellow handicap debutants Shot Boii (second choice) and Fortyfive West are also interesting, while Greenrock Abbey may improve back at 3m and Blumen Glory has possibilities in a first-time tongue-tie. Most of the others are a lot more exposed.
On the balance of this season’s form, the most appealing contestants are the C&D winners FILE ILLICO and Desque De L’Isle in that slight order of preference. The former may have more to offer in the retained cheekpieces, while the latter is interesting back down in grade. Most of the others are well handicapped on peak form.
Recent Taunton winner Natty Night has plenty of scope for further progress over hurdles and is respected but BEN LILLY (nap) was better than him on the Flat and displayed significant hurdling promise when fourth in a pretty good Newbury novice last month. He gets the vote. Feel The Pinch is next on the list.

Another chance is given to point/hurdles winner GIVE US A SWIG, who posted an encouraging effort over C&D in November and returns here off a handy mark. Second choice is Kestrel Valley who, like the selection, is well handicapped on hurdles form. Brooksway Fair warrants respect back over fences and Powerful Position has possibilities granted a clear round, while chase debutants Rockhamtom and Kotki are open to improvement.
Checkitsme is unpenalised for her recent Leicester win and still has fairly low mileage but it might pay to give another chance to ROCK ON RITA, who was unable to justify strong market support after racing too freely over 3m in December but remains very unexposed and may benefit from today’s drop back in trip. So Socksy started off in handicaps with two very respectable runs on heavy going and could plausibly be seen to much better effect on today’s quicker ground.

Standard-setter Campden Lad and likely improver Jaunty Zing look best of the runners with bumper experience, while Irish point winner Tahmuras needs a close look on his debut for Paul Nicholls. However, the suggestion is attractively bred newcomer SPRING MEADOW who will be all the more interesting if the market speaks positively. Second choice is fellow debutant Herakles Westwood who, like the selection, has an appealing pedigree.
