The Turners Novices’ Chase could pitch Bob Olinger against Galopin Des Champs but our ace new pundit Rory Delargy doesn’t think the pair will face off in the opening race on day three’s card.

Rory Delargy:

“It’s harsh to say Bob Olinger’s been underwhelming. Because he was so good last year, whatever he did this year was going to go under the microscope and everyone’s looking for any potential chink on his armour.

“He hasn’t done what he achieved over hurdles yet but he didn’t truly catch the eye until Cheltenham last year, which tends to be Henry de Bromhead’s way. He was thinking of running him at the Dublin Racing Festival but decided he did enough at Punchestown last time out to go straight to Cheltenham.

“Bob Olinger was typically impressive at the end of his last race. He doesn’t blow you away with his jumping but he doesn’t back off the fences and stutter into them. He approached them perfectly well to give you confidence in his jumping. He’s not super quick away from the fences and he’s a little bit careful in the air but you have to look pretty hard to find fault.

“Capodanno was behind in second that day and he’s a very decent performer. He’d be an interesting outsider from an each-way point of view. You can argue Capodanno’s jumping was better at Punchestown but Bob Olinger’s was fine and what’s always impressive is what he finds when under pressure.

“He’s no better at this stage than Galopin Des Champs in terms of what he’s done but they may not both be heading to this race anyway. It looks to be the weakest of the three novice chases at the Festival and I’m not keen to be against him at his price.

“If Galopin Des Champs turns up then it’s an entirely different race than if it’s Bob Olinger against L’Homme Presse et al. I’d love him in this as he’s the one horse that could exploit that tiny weakness in Bob Olinger. He’d be quicker through the air and away from the fences. It would make it tactically difficult for Bob.

“Galopin Des Champs is so good over a fence it’d be a tremendous clash if they went but I get the impression they might not do. The profile of the race probably suits him better than the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase, however.

“Bravemansgame is slick through the air and quick away from the fences so if you put him against Galopin Des Champs they’d potentially be at each other’s throats from an early stage. In that respect, the shorter race would suit Galopin Des Champs as well.

“We’ll see what Willie does but when the market says he’s more likely to go for the longer race, do you want to go for Galopin Des Champs?”
