There was little to separate DIRHAM EMIRATI and Cuban Cigar at Kempton earlier this month, but given that was the selections first run over hurdles and after five months off, there is reason to think he can reverse the form now. He was fairly useful on the Flat and new connections went to 62,000 guineas to secure his services, and he is very much the type to improve with that initial experience under his belt. Coolnaugh Haze shaped with promise on his first start over hurdles at Warwick and is a likely improver, also.
The drop back in trip shouldn’t inconvenience the front-running GUGUSS COLLONGES, who can notch a second course win of the winter. He confirmed the promise of his debut over fences when opening his account last month, and he pulled clear of the remainder with the winner last time. He is 5 lb higher in the weights now but is going the right way. Zamani has jumped out to his left on right-handed courses on his previous chase starts so he could be suited by going this way round, and he looks competitively weighted.
HECOULDBETHEONE was placed in points and made a winning start under Rules in a novice hurdle at Fontwell on Boxing Day, impressing with his jumping and the way he saw the race out despite the conditions and having taken a while to settle. He ran to a similar level when bumping into a potentially smart type of Nicky Henderson’s at Newbury last time and is fully expected to resume winning ways in what doesn’t look a strong race. Social City can chase him home.

BARD OF BRITTANY can boast a solid record at this course and his last win came here over two and a half miles last May. He has now dropped 5 lb below that winning mark, and shaped better than the bare result at Taunton last time, not getting the clearest of runs after jumping three out and forced wide entering the straight. He rallied well, though, and is definitely weighted to go well if building on that. Innisfree Lad won a veterans’ handicap chase at the last meeting here and will be a big danger if holding it together.
REPRESENTING BOB has been a revelation since switching to fences, winning all three of his starts so far, and relishing the step up to this sort of trip when scoring with plenty in hand at Catterick over Christmas. He proved much too good for those rivals even with a rusty round of jumping, and that form is working out well, so a subsequent 9 lb rise may not be enough to extend his winning streak in this sphere. Rose of Aghaboe returned to form when second over course and distance six weeks ago and may pose the main threat.
It would be no surprise whatsoever were SYSTEMIC to leave his novice form well behind now switched to handicap company. Indeed, the five-year-old has been handed a potentially handy mark judged on his exploits on the Flat, and represents an in-form yard who have a good record here. Honestlyntrufully is another handicap debutant to note, but bigger threats may be posed by Global Wonder, who was left with too much to do when chasing home Hey Bob over course and distance last time.
