This looks a terrific mares’ novices’ hurdle where a case can be made for plenty, but it is RAINYDAY WOMAN who is taken to come out on top. She was a two-time winner in bumpers and has improved markedly to win her last three starts over hurdles, running to a useful level when defeating Game On For Glory in a listed event at Taunton three weeks ago. She coped fine with the drop back to two miles on that occasion and looks set to make another bold bid from the front. Nurse Susan, who has won both of her starts in style so far, remains open to any amount of improvement, and looks the chief danger.
A competitive handicap chase for mares, and the lightly-raced WOULDUBEWELL just about edges the vote. She was well backed when making a winning start over fences on her seasonal return at Fontwell last month, and looked every bit a natural, jumping accurately and she and the runner-up pulled a fair way clear. She shaped well and still looked like a horse ahead of her mark at Haydock last time, left with too much to do in relation to the two that beat her, so she will remain of interest from just a 1 lb higher mark. Fontaine Collonges is another who’s well worth another chance with conditions likely to be ideal.
ECLAIR D’AINAY took apart a useful field at Wetherby over Christmas, a return to front-running tactics seeming to bring out the best in him. An attacking ride appears to bring out the best in him and he could be hard to catch again here despite a 7 lb rise in the weights. Frero Banbou confirmed his return to form with a fine run at Cheltenham six weeks ago and looks a big threat, while Le Ligerien will also be a player if backing up his Chepstow performance.

This looks a trappy affair with the majority having to dispel a lesser run last time, but on the pick of his form, ON THE BLIND SIDE should be good enough to take care of these. He is now a 10-year-old, and was pulled up in the Relkeel Hurdle at Cheltenham last time, but this represents a drop in class for him, so he may well be able to take advantage with the return to this longer trip in his favour. Calva d’Auge was found out in a big-field handicap last time, but the return to a smaller field may suit, while Emitom was a smart hurdler in his pomp and can’t be ruled out back in this sphere.
BROKEN HALO was quickly sent chasing following a disappointing reappearance over hurdles at Sandown in November, and shaped well to be third to a progressive, well-handicapped sort. He confirmed the promise of that run in spades when routing his opposition in heavy ground at Exeter last time, jumping well and pressing on for home some way out. He could hardly have won any easier that day and, though this will be tougher, he looks like a chaser to keep on the right side for now. Colonial Dreams is late to fences, but showed enough when runner-up at Newbury to suggest he is up to making his mark here.
It could be worth chancing METIER to build on his fourth in a strong handicap at Ascot before Christmas as he’s starting to look well handicapped on his Tolworth form of last season. He stepped up considerably on his return run at Sandown and he will definitely be well suited by likely heavy ground. Irish-raiders Carrarea and Lucky Max likely have more to offer and are feared most ahead of Chti Balko.
CHAMBARD returned to action with a ready success under this rider at Exeter on New Year’s Day and, while the handicapper has hit him with a 9 lb rise for that authoritative effort, he still has plenty of handicapping scope based on past exploits, so he’s fancied to land this for his thriving stable. Neil The Legend is also well respected on the back of a winning start for Nicky Henderson.
