Evening Song managed to get her head in front early on in her career, but paid the price by being very harshly handicapped since. She has finally worked herself down to a mid-60’s rating and put up just about her best performance for a while at Southwell last time. She is well drawn, well handicapped and this course and distance should suit her hold-up style perfectly.
Ayr Harbour put up a really smart performance off an eight-month break when running Misty Grey to a neck at Wolverhampton, despite being a bit keen and gassy early on. He’s a much better performer on the all-weather with his rating some 24lb higher than the turf. That should’ve blown away the cobwebs and put him spot on for this Class 2 assignment.
Soldiers Minute now finds himself back up with a triple-digit rating, but that shouldn’t hold him back for further success, despite lumping a big weight now. His form when beating Lord Of The Lodge has been boosted with that one running out an easy winner at Kempton since. He’s very flexible from a tactics point of view and this trainer/jockey combination of Keith Dalgleish and Callum Rodriguez are going to be a very potent punters’ pal throughout 2022.
Devizes is rock solid down at this Class 6 company and has been expertly placed by Pat Phelan to win five races for jockey Rhys Clutterbuck. He’s off another super success underneath this young rider and, although he is expected to be tight at the head of the market, he could be the cornerstone for many an accumulator with Paddy. He’s a no-nonsense, handy ride, so shouldn’t find any trouble down at the basement level.
Magical Mile ran an absolute cracker here in a nursery over 6 furlongs when hitting the line strongly in the closing stages off a rating of 67. He has a few things in his favour again now as Tom Marquand taking over in the saddle and he’s been dropped 5lb to 62 by the handicapper. He’s also had the cruelest cut of all with a gelding operation. All of that should add up to an overdue visit to the winners’ circle.
Kinderfrau has taken her form to another level since stepping up in distance. She bolted up here two starts ago and was arguably unlucky at Wolverhampton when she got going too late and was only beaten in a blanket finish. It wouldn’t be very often that this stable gets one with such a smart pedigree and I still feel she is underestimated, now on a rating in the low 70’s. Trying wo miles now, she can round off a good night’s work and double up for Tom Marquand.
