American Mike was really impressive last time out at Navan in the Future Champions race, it was a good gallop which suited him. That route was the same way previous Champion Bumper winners Envoi Allen and Samcro went. American Mike also impressed first time out at Down Royal in October and he’s won both of his races really impressively. He’s the one everyone else needs to aim at in this one.

Willie Mullins has both Redemption Day and Facile Vega. Redemption Day looked really good on the eye when winning at Leopardstown in December but I’m struggling to work out how much he has to give. What he did on paper was the equal of Facile Vega at Leopardstown on St Stephen’s Day. The one difference was I felt Facile Vega was learning on the job. He was a bit greener and had to be nudged along in the race. He impressed me though as he was very strong at the finish. He’s also got a lot of scope physically to improve. Redemption Day had learned not to be green at home, it only took a little effort from Patrick Mullins to get the job done.

The big question is what improvement could we see before Cheltenham? We see less of all the horses leading up to the Festival so it’s hard to be confident.

I liked PINK IN THE PARK‘s performance at Listowel in September. You don’t normally go there at that time of year to look for Bumper horses but she was great. She really quickened up when asked and she galloped through the line. She’s got a great turn of foot. What she achieved there showed there’s more to come. If you put her in a tougher race, you’d see improvement.

I also like the look of Champ Kiely for Willie, who is a big price. He won a bumper back in May at Limerick. He hasn’t been seen since but if he ends up getting re-routed to this he’s worth keeping an eye on. That might not be the plan so it might be worth holding off until that becomes a bit clearer.

Springwell Bay was really impressive at Market Rasen in November, winning by 14l. That was visually impressive but the British bumpers tend to be less competitive than the Irish ones. He couldn’t have won any better but he beat an average bunch. So I wouldn’t take that form too literally. He’s clearly a good horse down the line but I wouldn’t dig in too much.

Andreas Wohler brings over Estacas from Germany in the most sensible route for the horse. He’ll be hoping to win the Bumper to give him more options with the horse in the future. Estacas looked clueless for most of the race at Ascot but finished very strongly to win. I would be wary of backing him.

If I had to pick one now, I’d go Pink In The Park. I was very impressed but she’ll have other options too. She will most likely go to the Dublin Racing Festival and she could be boosting her claims there.
