JPR ONE is held in some regard by connections and he has made a most promising start to his career over hurdles, downing a couple of high-profile types when making a winning debut at Exeter in November, and enhancing his reputation further in defeat in an above-average novice hurdle at Cheltenham last month. He shaped like the best horse in the race that day, headed only close home, and this scopey sort is strongly fancied to progress even further now. Grangeclare Glory will benefit from this return to a shorter trip and is next on the list.
KNICKERBOCKERGLORY looked a bright prospect when winning a bumper on his final start for Alastair Ralph last season and he has since caught the eye in two starts over hurdles for these connections. He was heavily backed, but was too keen for his own good on his debut in this sphere at Wetherby, and shaped better than the bare result on his latest start in listed company at Haydock in November. He was left with a mountain to climb on that occasion and can take full advantage of a return to calmer waters now. Nicky Henderson’s Quickbuck offered enough in bumpers to suggest he has a future over hurdles so he’s feared most.
SAN GIOVANNI, Natty Night and Mister Splash were third, fourth and fifth in the same big-field Wincanton maiden hurdle last month, and the first-named is taken to build on the promise he showed most. He started at odds of 25/1 that day on what was his first start for Harry Fry, so clearly he was expected to need the run, and he is the type that could make above-average progress now. Yvette Guilbert, who finished fourth at Southwell last time, is also respected for the Skeltons.
It is hard not to be positive about all of these, but QUOI DE NEUF won with any amount in hand at Taunton last time, and is fancied to notch a second win over fences. He split a couple of useful sorts on his chasing debut last season, and had dropped 10 lb below that mark following some lesser efforts after, but he was seemingly fitter for his reappearance and took full advantage. There could be more to come from him now and he is taken to defy a rise in the weights. All Dancer, who is having his first start for Paul Nicholls, is dangerous to discount, though.
This looks competitive enough, but the vote goes to AGGY WITH IT, who managed to win three times last season. She still looked full of running when falling two out at Doncaster on her final start last season, and this lightly-raced eight-year-old should have plenty more to offer this year. She is a course and distance winner and should be ready to roll on her first start for 10 months. Leoncavallo is feared most on the back of his good Doncaster second with Arriverdici weighted to go well if fully tuned up on his return.
QUEEN OF THE COURT remains a maiden under Rules, but she is a winning pointer, and she offered something to work on when hitting the frame on her chase debut over further at this course last month. She made good headway down the back straight on that occasion and wasn’t unduly punished once her chance had gone, shaping as though a drop back in trip would suit. The handicapper has dropped her 5 lb since, reducing her to a career-low mark, and she could well take advantage now. Feodora, who also has experience in points, may prove the biggest danger now sent chasing.

This looks a tight handicap hurdle to close proceedings, and it is GAOT who is chanced to come out on top. She is becoming expensive to follow, failing to build on previous promise at Exeter last time, but she has highlighted that she is on a favourable mark in the past, and is worth another chance now with the hood removed. No No Tonic is generally a consistent type and is another to consider.
