The curtain comes down on the action-packed winter meeting at Cagnes-Sur-Mer on Sunday, with seven races being disputed for a prize fund of a staggering €450,000. Sandwiched between St. Tropez and Monaco, there is plenty to attract an onlooker to ‘Cagnes’ and the racing certainly adds substance to that wow factor this weekend.

WELCOME TO PADDY POWER NEWS!

There are plenty of big names laying their cards on the table in search of some all-important black type, which makes things very exciting from a punting point of view, especially in the big-race finale where we find my NAP of the day!

12.05 – Norville (N/B)

The Champion Hurdle for four-year-old’s is always a very exciting race to watch and tends to be ran at a ferocious pace, which should suit the progressive (if somewhat quirky) NORVILLE.

Norville’s trainer Pierre Fertillet excels at Cagnes-Sur-Mer and looks to be getting the better of a difficult argument with this horse. Norville proved almost listed level on the flat last season, winning three of his ten starts for trainer Yann Barbarot. Since switched to Fertillet, the son of Air Chief Marshall has encountered some issues in both the jumping and temperament departments.

However, on his most recent start, Norville finally put it all together and took one of the preparatory contests with consummate ease, having been dropped out last off a sharp pace. Provided that the field go the expected gallop this weekend, then the application of similar tactics and a hood should return the same result in this listed contest – Norville really is a horse with bags of talent!

13.50 – Cookilayone (Each Way)

Theoretically speaking, COOKILAYONE has very little chance of turning over the likes of well weighted rivals, Jeu De Paume or Karuso De Gruchy, who are both well clear on official ratings.

However, Cagnes is a specialist course and not every horse can handle the speed at which races are run there (which is possibly why Karuso De Gruchy underperformed at this track last term) and the yard of David Cottin has been horrendously out of form this winter (Jeu De Paume). Cookilayone proved that she is capable of dominating at this course with an easy success last time out – she slipped the field down the back straight to take a valuable handicap virtually on the bridle.

Her trainer Matthieu Pitart and jockey Dylan Ubeda have been almost unstoppable this winter and even though Cookilayone looks to have a tough task on paper, she is exceptionally game and jumps efficiently. There is value to be snatched by the EW punter here in a relatively small field and I’d be surprised if she wasn’t placed at least.

14.32 – Manon Des Sources (NAP)

The final race of the card and the highlight of the meeting – the Group 3 Grand Prix de la Ville de Nice is always a well contested event, with the same names returning year in, year out.

Reigning champion Berjou bids for a hat-trick in this contest but looks up against the ropes to hold onto his title and faces a younger, more progressive rival this time around.

Unbeaten over fences, MANON DES SOURCES has been earmarked as a future champion by his trainer Matthieu Pitart and should take all the beating. The lightly raced six-year-old boasts a track record of 112 and put some well-established rivals firmly in their places on his three starts over fences. Felix De Giles has built up a solid rapport with Manon Des Sources and gave him a superb ride to get the better of Jeu De Paume last time out.

If in the same form, I think that it will take a proven Group horse to overturn Manon Des Sources and apart from Berjou (who theoretically is 6 kgs wrong with Manon Des Sources) there is not another in the field. On all known evidence, Manon Des Sources looks an extremely solid NAP and should finish off the day nicely for us!
