Malakahna, a winner on the Flat in France, made an impressive start over hurdles at Fakenham in October, taking really well to the new discipline and scoring by eight lengths on her first outing for Ian Williams. She failed to build on that when upped in grade at Aintree last month, but that was a tough assignment for such an inexperienced filly and she can bounce back here.
Martello Sky is a prolific winner and she took her record over hurdles to five wins from seven starts when scoring at Cheltenham last month. There was a lot to like about the way Martello Sky knuckled down after the last and dug deep to fend off Indefatigable, and it’s possible that this steadily-progressive mare could still have a bit more to offer. She should launch another bold bid.
Farinet was pulled up on his return in the Racing Post Gold Cup but that was a competitive event and he is back in much calmer waters here. Farinet made an encouraging start for Venetia Williams when third in a good-quality novices’ handicap chase at Haydock last season and he built on that when successful over this course and distance on his final start of the campaign. The strength Farinet showed at the finish marked him out as a chaser with more to offer and he remains with potential.
Numitor took well to chasing last season, winning two of his three starts, and he has raised his game again this term. He took a big step forward from his reappearance effort when making all in a strong handicap at Wetherby and he ran at least as well in defeat when runner-up behind a good prospect at Newbury in November. Numitor is a likeable front-runner and will take plenty of catching.
Constitution Hill posted a hugely impressive 14-length success on his debut over this course and distance last month, powering clear after the last to beat the promising Might I in a good time. That performance marked Constitution Hill down as something well out of the ordinary and he is at least 10 lb clear of his rivals on Timeform’s ratings. He also has the ‘Large P’ which indicates that is capable of much better, so he should prove too good for these rivals.

Aso is on a long losing run which stretches back to New Year’s Day 2019 but he offered plenty of encouragement when runner-up on his first crack at a veterans’ chase at Haydock last month. Aso had to settle for second behind Blaklion but there was no shame in finding that revitalised rival (who has won again subsequently) too strong. That was a good race by veterans’ chase standards and Aso, who twice finished placed in the Ryanair Chase earlier in his career, could prove a cut above these rivals.
Hermes Boy has made a promising start to his career and he looks to have been let in lightly on this handicap debut. He was slightly disappointing when only runner-up at Bangor having been a big eye-catcher on his hurdling debut at Worcester, but he got back on the up at Exeter last month, registering a ready success. He has more to offer after only three starts over hurdles and can make a successful handicap debut.
