Happy New Year! To herald in the next 365 days we’ll refer to as 2022, we’ve corralled four fine flutters to construct a lovely Lucky 15 to hopefully start the year on a good note.
With tonnes of action across the tracks from the UK and Ireland on Saturday, we’ve picked one popular punt at Catterick, Exeter, Fakenham and Southwell to form our Lucky 15 (4 horses, 15 bets) for Saturday. Let’s take a look.
Hexham winner Bob’s Bar travelled well for a long way when upped to 2m5f last time and is respected on this drop back in trip, but preference is for ASK THE DOC, who has shown plenty of promise in both his hurdle runs and sets the standard on his improved close second in similar conditions at Doncaster last month.
Gosheven was a Doncaster maiden hurdle winner and his second there in a handicap has worked out well. He ran a solid first race over fences in a three-runner handicap over C&D in November and the heavy ground is not a bother to him.
There’s a good chance this will be fought out by the two previous course winners at the top of the racecard. Slight preference is for LEAVE MY ALONE, who seemed to have bettered Barden Bella when that mare fell at the penultimate fence here last January and has the more persuasive record on slow ground. That said, Barden Bella posted a good effort in defeat when we last saw him in October.
It is too soon to be making sweeping generalisations about the effect of the draw over this trip on the re-laid surface but the early evidence suggests you wouldn’t pick a high number if given the option. With that in mind, the fact that THE THIN BLUE LINE was able to win as easily as he did from stall 14 here ten days ago offers hope he can deal with the 8lb rise.
Stall 11 still doesn’t look ideal but there is a lot to like about his claims aside from that. Portelet Bay still looks well handicapped and makes the shortlist, while Not Now Zeb fared better in blinkers on Wednesday and is another to consider.
