There’s very good racing at Ascot on Friday where some big names will be trying to uphold some pretty lofty reputations with the 2022 Cheltenham Festival in mind. Let’s get to the bets!
The Venetia Williams-trained six-year-old looked in need of the run at Plumpton last month in a good race when finishing fourth to Champagne Well. It’s a Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle where rider Ned Fox can claim 10lbs and FRANCO D’AUNOU could be well placed to take advantage. Any rain at Ascot will help his chances even more.
JONBON is the big talking horse from Nicky Henderson’s yard, who is among the favourites for the Supreme Novices Hurdle at Cheltenham next March. I was really taken with his performance when winning on his first run over hurdles at Newbury last time. He is maturing all the time, but will need to be on his game again now as there’s some smart opposition. He certainly looks the part though.
PIC D’ORHY started favourite for a novice chase at Newbury last month, but fell four fences from home. We can’t be certain how he would have fared, but the jockey report indicated he has most of the field covered before he tipped up. He looked really good when winning very nicely at Ffos Las in October and can get back to winning ways again now.

TOP DOG ran a very good race at Cheltenham in October when under a length second to Bonttay in a contest that will throw up a lot of winners. Emma Lavelle’s charge could be a bit of value to go one better now.
